Lobsters invade, pigs & poultry party, and insects perform...

L.A. Zoo
Celebrities, pigs and poultry will mingle on Saturday at the annual Animal Acres Gala to raise money for farm animal rescue - vegan fare will be served needless to say.

The Zoom Room grand opening on Sunday will raise funds for the Morris Animal Foundation with doggy tricks, adoptions, Pink's hot dogs and a party - the event is free but you and your dog must RSVP - the Zoom Room will donate $10 to the Morris Animal Foundation for each advance RSVP.

Bring an instrument and jam with an Improvisational Insect Orchestra performance on Sunday at LACE.  Okay, they don't have any real dinosaurs at the L.A. Zoo, only metal sculptures like the one above.

Did you know? You can take a UCLA Extension course in Observing Animals: Behavioral Studies in Zoos taught by Los Angeles Zoo Director of Research Dr. Cathleen Cox. Class begins Sept. 23.

FOOD FESTIVITIES
The annual September lobster invasion begins with the Long Beach Lobster Festival on Friday - Sunday (next weekend they land in San Pedro and then move on to Redondo Beach the following weekend).

Valleyites get in on the food truck fest action as "The Incredibles" meet up with the edibles for a free outdoor movie screening at the Granada Hills Movie Night and Food Truck Fest. How about a Taco Cinema?  Yes indeed, more film and food trucks on Saturday Sept. 11 as a part of the Downtown Film Festival Los Angeles (Sept. 8-19). Forget the food trucks, get in your truck and head to Eylsian Park for a Mississippi Picnic - catfish from Yazoo and bbq from Tupalo anyone? And of course there is abundant fair food as the L.A. County Fair continues in Pomona.  More upcoming Festivals.

MORE INTERESTING THINGS TO DO THIS WEEKEND
Become a delegate at the "Constitutional Convention" in honor of Constitution Day - at the International Printing Press Musuem in Carson on Saturday.

Hollow Trees Concert - foot stomping Bluegrass at Family Fundays at the Theatricum Botanicum on Sunday.

KCET Departures in Venice at SPARC - your chance to add to the story on Sunday.

There's more, much more...

RACE ACROSS THE FENCES: "NEIGHBORS"
AT THE MATRIX THEATRE

Review by M.R. Hunter
NEIGHBORSOne of the questions posed in the West Coast premiere of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins stimulating play isn't "What will the neighbors think?" as it is "What do we really think of our neighbors?" The neighbors in question are the Crow family-a troupe of African-American minstrels in blackface that move into a middle-class track development next door to the interracial Patterson home which sets off a firestorm of deeply-rooted issues about racial identity and perception...

"ALL MY SONS" HITS HOME
AT THE RUSKIN GROUP THEATRE

by M.R. Hunter

All My Sons
WWII may be over in Arthur Miller's devastating tragedy, but in the comfortable middle-class, Keller household an entirely insidious and deeply more personal war is about to be waged. Taking no prisoners in this quietly unfolding plot, each character must confront a terrible truth they wish to deny. The consequences are shattering, the message a warning against the dehumanizing effect of big business when there is no ethical filter to keep it in restraint.

...There are not any licenses taken in this straightforward, if not determinedly exacting production. It runs as smoothly as a well-oiled machine. The pace strikes a perfect balance between measured and frenzied without losing control of either...
