Culture Shock LA presents: The Soul Survivors: Seeking Refuge. Music, spoken word and dance tonight at the Ford Amphitheatre.

Or watch the new sport of Netball with the LA Sparks at Staples Center also tonight.

Brainy, zany, crazy competitors and their creative contraptions try to fly over Rainbow Harbor in Long Beach on Saturday at Red Bull's Flugtag event.

In Burbank they'll be Be-boppin' in the Park at the Vintage Car and Street Festival on Saturday.

This weekend North Hollywood goes On The Fritz with our favorite, funny weather forecaster Fritz Coleman at the historic El Portal.

KingGilletteParkDid you know that you can roast marshmellows and sit round a campfire and you don't even have to camp out?  During the summer several of the parks in the LA mountains have campfire programs each week. Local parks have many special events and programs, check the Eye Spy LA Recreation page.

There's more, much more...

Visit the Eye Spy LA Calendar  and explore all the event & activity options this week and beyond.

GOATS, NOT GOAT CHEESE
by Nancy Mills

GOATSThey belch. They bleat. They munch. And they are one of my most memorable downtown moments.

But, I need to fill you in.

Last year in July when it was really hot (I swear that was not the issue), I was walking down Hill, in front of the Central Market, and I looked across the street at Angels Knoll park, right next to Angels Flight and I saw about 100 goats...

WOMEN TAKE BACK THE STAGE:
THE LOS ANGELES FEMALE PLAYWRIGHTS INITIATIVE

by M.R. Hunter

FPI
Only one out of the last ten plays I have reviewed was by a woman playwright. 1 in 10. Not very good odds if you're a female trying to break into the largely male dominant stage scene.

Sadly, this statistic reflects the harsh reality for women writers everywhere, not just in Los Angeles. But the grassroots organization, Los Angeles Female Playwrights Initiative (FPI) is taking action...

FASHION FORWARD: WWW.GOTRYITON.COM

BY CICI

FASHIONNow that you've found somewhere to go on the Eye Spy LA calendar, what to wear is the big question.

"It looks good, but does it look good on me?"

For those who spend more time anxiously standing in front of the mirror with questions like, "Does this make my thighs look big?" "Do these colors match?" "Can I get away with wearing plaid?" Fear not. Why rely on your well-meaning friends or partner to answer these questions (not altogether truthfully) when you can take your look to the masses and let them decide if it's a do, or a big don't...

A WOLF INSIDE THE FENCE @ THE FIRST LOOK FESTIVAL
by M.R. Hunter
A Wolf Inside The FenceOne of three plays in the First Look Festival, Joseph Fisher's dramedy creeps along at a maddeningly slow pace with a plot as thick and tedious as any world history textbook.

The knock-you-on-the-side-of-your-head stock characters are of the typical all-American high school trope: the bad girl that smokes out front, a frustrated history teacher, an ambitious principal, and a letch masquerading as a mathematics teacher.

Throw in the sound of a school bell along with the faint aroma of hormones, acne cream and adolescent desperation and it feels like enduring homeroom all over again...

  747 SPIRAL, 1970
by Charles Phoenix
CHARLES PHOENIX
A mod stewardess, probably pushing a cart, walks up the red-carpeted aisle while a male passenger, sporting a timeless classic white turtleneck, just stands there. I'm not sure if he's staring at the gracious tablescape or that hypnotizing spiral staircase leading to and from the second floor. When was the last time you saw a spiral staircase at 35,000 feet?
