FIREWORKS!

FlagOOH AAH - FIREWORKS! In our safety obsessed society, where no hang nail goes unlitigated, normally cautious people become momentarily unhinged with delight at the thought of lighting up a hot, sparkly, multicolored, illegal incendiary device on Independence Day. DON'T DO IT. Go to a public event - there are so many to choose from and many of them are free.

North, South, East & West, Eye Spy LA has compiled an extensive list of this year's festivities. You'll find our editorial staff favorites and many others along with tips for getting the best views on this year's FIREWORKS
page.

YAY! Its a long weekend and there is more to do than just watch the fireworks.
  • Pignic anyone? Have a tofu hot dog at Animal Acres where chickens sunbath, cows kiss and pigs demand a belly rub.
  • Dance Downtown - Friday night learn Bollywood/Bhangra - free lessons.
  • Saturday you can watch as folks Dribble with the L.A. Sparks outside Staples Center on Chick Hearn Court
You don't need to wait until Friday to find out what to do each week.  Visit the Eye Spy LA homepage anytime for the latest news, features and reviews updated daily.

Or just visit the Eye Spy LA Calendar  and explore all the event & activity options this week and beyond.

TWO KINGS, TWO CASTS: KING LEAR @ DEAFWEST THEATRE IN NOHO
Review by M.R. Hunter

KING LEAR To see "King Lear" once in awhile is an exhaustive experience alone, but to see it twice on consecutive nights is akin to blissful agony. Blissful in that the rotating double-cast Antaeus Ensemble packs an emotional wallop, searing the words to your brain like a scalding red-hot poker. The agony, then, is the tragedy of how the foolish and arrogant antics of a king are his ultimate undoing-again and again-both figuratively and in this case, literally...

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
ESLA Weekly PollLAST WEEK: We asked if you think there are too many pedestrians.  70% said no, they thought there should be more. So that leads us to this week's poll - if there were more pedestrians there wouldn't be so much traffic to get stuck in...

MONKEY BUSINESS AT UNIVERSAL STUDIOS
by M.R. Hunter
KING KONGKing Kong has finally returned to Universal Studios and the burned out back lot is back too.  Eye Spy LA was there, among a gaggle of press and invited guests, for the heavily hyped and highly anticipated arrival of the giant ape in 3-D glory this week.

After a morning of hair-raising expectations, the tram to Skull Island was finally underway...

LET THE STARS HELP YOU DECIDE WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK
by Cici Psy-Chic
EYESTROLOGYHappy birthday to these celebrity Cancers: Liv Tyler (07/01), Lindsay Lohan (07/02), Tom Cruise (07/03), Geraldo Rivera (07/04), Huey Lewis (07/05), 50 Cent (07/06), Jorja Fox (07/07) and Kevin Bacon (07/08).

This is a good week for getting things done, Angelinos! Make sure to schedule in some time for fun and festivities for the Fourth of July weekend. Stay cool-in both body and spirit. Keep those flaring tempers in check or else the wrong sparks could fly. Be considerate and diplomatic.

"OPUS" @ THE FOUNTAIN THEATRE HITS A HOLLOW NOTE Review by M.R. Hunter

OPUS William Congreve's oft misquoted line from "The Mourning Bride" claims that "Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast..." but in Michael Hollinger's play about a high-strung quartet, its charms work to provoke a savage unrest. Egos clash, bitterness reigns while Beethoven's op. 131 proves to be either their undoing or the quartet's crowning glory...

THE TAROT REPORT - THE FIVE OF WANDS
by Cici Psy-Chic
THE TAROT REPORTKeywords: Competition, struggle, delays, disagreements, obstacles

This week, Angelinos need to be on guard as minor irritants, frustrating miscommunications and petty problems may arise when we least expect them. For those in the know-treat this time like a minor Mercury in retrograde. We've been working so hard or working hard to find work that are nerves have frayed around the edges. Double-check legal documents, check your tire pressure, be observant of others, and try not to let off too much steam. Now is not the time to be competitive. Like last week's Two of Cups, we can get past this week with a little cooperation...

AT LAST, A PREDICTA!, SOMEWHERE, USA 1961
by Charles Phoenix
CHARLES PHOENIX SLIDE OF THE WEEKMy eyes just about popped out of my head when I spotted a Predicta, the most beautiful TV of all time in this 1961 slide.

This is an uber-rare sighting of a Predicta in its original habitat. These space age style icons usually don't show up in family photos. I know because I've been looking for a long time...
