SPRING CLEANING: EARTH DAY IN L.A.

Earth, our very own cosmic speck that we rely on to sustain us in an inhospitable universe, sustains quite a bit of damage fulfilling that mission. So what can we do?

Rejuvenate a California State Park - this Saturday volunteer to help plant trees, restore trails and habitat and clean up beaches. Downtown at the California Historic Park volunteers will be planting trees.

Rid yourself of your excess e-waste. Toss all those old gizmos and gadgets collecting dust bunnies in the nooks and crannies of your home. There will be a mobile e-waste collection event this Saturday at Councilmember Zine's District Office in Reseda. You can find other collection events and locations at the LA County Sanitation Districtwebsite.

Last Year's Topanga Earth Day Festival - Eye Spy LA Video
Topanga Earth Day Festival Video
Have some fun this weekend and go green at an Earth Day event near you.  Descanso Gardans in La Canada, the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica and the Annual Topanga Earth Day Festival in Topanga Canyon are a few possibilities.

WILDLIFE: Call the California Wildflower Hotline to find out where to find them.  Vicariously Travel to Peach Tree Pottery for the beautiful wildlife and nature photography of world traveler Anne Howley or to pick out a ceramic bird feeder to attract some wildlife to your garden (15% of proceeds will benefit the EIF Revlon Run/Walk for Women).

Check the Parks & Gardens page for more blooming events and places to go or the Recreation page for walks and hikes.

OTHER THINGS TO DO: Take the Culver City Challenge, take the Spring Brewery Artwalk, watch bicycle road racing at the Torrance Criterium, walk your dog at the Nuts for Mutts walk in Agoura or the Fido & Friends walk in Redondo Beach, listen to a Gershwin Celebration at the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge, join the Man vs. Bar Pub Crawl to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, or Relay For Life at Pierce College this weekend to benefit the American Cancer Society.

FAMILY COUCH PORTRAIT, SOMEWHERE, USA, 1957
by Charles Phoenix
CHARLES PHOENIX SLIDE OF THE WEEKThis spirited family portrait isn't about the blond-framed oriental curios and paint by numbers hanging high on that very beige wall; the two-tiered lampshade peeking on the right; dad's magazine; the smiley boy; the smirky girl; or the TV guide with Phil Silvers on the cover. This slide is about the View-Master...
