THINGS TO DO ON A RAINY DAY IN L.A.
When it's wet and wild in L.A. head for cover. Visit a museum, take in a play, concert or comedy show, see a film or go on an indoor scavenger hunt. Sports and photography fans: I've heard from a reliable source that the current exhibit SPORT: loose and Leifer at the Annenberg Space for Photography is well worth the visit. Admission is free to this relatively new exhibit space that opened last March in Century City in the former Shubert Theater. They also have special events and lectures associated with the exhibit which are also free.A LOT OF ENTERTAINMENT FOR 20 BUCKS: I caught the opening night of the new musical/comedy/cabaret: Gravityworks at Cinespace last night. A talented cast of thousands (well over a dozen anyway) and a five piece band entertain you for a couple of hours on Thursdays in Hollywood - then an after party keeps it going. Did I mention the puppets, belly dancer and barking dog? Just go next Thursday.

DENISE CROSBY & GALE HAROLD RISE TO THE OCCASION IN WILLIAMS' "ORPHEUS DESCENDING" by M.R. Hunter
There is a popular conception that talented stage actors can more easily adapt their fine performances for TV/film than the reverse is true, despite the star power effect on the box office. When the play in question is one of Tennessee Williams' most challenging productions, there is a tendency to assume the worst going in, especially when the director-Lou Pepe, a documentary filmmaker is cutting his theatrical teeth on such an ambitious and unwieldy vehicle.
Surprisingly, Denise Crosby of Star Trek TNG and Gale Harold of Queer as Folk dispel these notions and more than rise to the occasion with scintillating, tactile command in this modern epic love story...

THIS WEEK IN DANCE by Kelly Hargraves
THIS WEEK @ REDCAT, Brazil's Grupo de Rua, the all-male crew recruited from the street dance scene in Rio, brooded on to the stage with their latest work "H3." By working toward a more contemporary theatrical dance model, Grupo strips break-dance dance of all it's usual showcasing performative elements.
NEXT WEEK: For the classical fans, Music Center begins it's 2010 season with the classic "Cinderella' choreographed by Sir Frederic Ashton and performed by The Joffrey Ballet, the first American company to be given the rights to perform it.
LAST WEEK: REDCAT's presentation of the youth company THE WOODEN FLOOR, was an impressive showing of a dedicated, creative, eclectic bunch of kids who started in an afterschool program and are clearly developing into fine young artists and adults...

TAKIN' THE METRO WITH BRYAN (LIKE WHO'S BRYAN?) by Nancy Mills
Bryan is a champ. My neighbor. The guy who lifted my Cost Plus couch (that came in a box and had to be assembled) with one hand. The guy who is an architect and put together my couch in five minutes without any tools. The gourmet cook. The one who always asks how I am when he sees me. I've crowned Bryan super-loft-man. But, now it is time to get to where I'm going with this post (no pun intended). Bryan loves to take public transportation. He hops on the Metro to go to his favorite Farmers Market in West Hollywood. He takes the bus to Super King on San Fernando Road. He rides the Dash to LA Live. One day, he said to me in the hallway, "Nancy, do you do the Dash?" And I said, "Bryan, I no longer jog." And he said, "Huh?" I'm originally from the Westside, I DRIVE - how was I suppose to know that the Dash was a long bus-y thing that drives you around downtown? Read the FULL STORY |
