KOOZA - PRODIGIOUS PHYSICALITY AND THRILLING SURPRISES
Review by Mark Share Cirque du Soleil returns to Santa Monica with a big heart - opening night receipts all went to two charities - and spectacular feats of human skill. The evening makes for a terrific date; so many happy couples enraptured by the grace and power of the athletes wearing hardly any clothes.
If you've seen the increasingly sophisticated Cirques show before, you'll applaud this return to the celebration of what the human body can do...

TREE AT [INSIDE] THE FORD
Julie Hebért's new play at [Inside] the Ford thoughtfully examines the tenuous relationship between three generations estranged by race, time and long-held secrets that bind the unlikeliest kin into a family struggling to relate with one another.
The discovery of old, love letters sets into motion a personal quest and surprising reunion between two families connected by a shared past, and Hebért's poignantly wrought lyricism delves into the gray areas of a seemingly black and white issue with moving relevancy and sharply hewn frankness. DANCE IN LA - Previews
by Kelly Hargraves
HEADS UP FOR TWO SPECIAL DANCE EVENTS this week: Anna Halprin's 1965 masterwork parades & changes, replays at REDCAT. Diavolo Dance Theater brings acrobatic spectacle to the Greek.
Everything Old is New Again Anna Halprin's 1965 masterwork parades & changes, replays.
REDCAT presents this full-scale reinterpretation of Anna Halprin's game- changing landmark of postmodern dance, where dancers improvise based on a set of movement and music scores, carrying out everyday tasks, like dressing and undressing, all the while inventing new gestures and movements. In 2009, it doesn't sound so groundbreaking but in 1965 the original piece was censored when it premiered in New York due to its frank treatment of nudity, challenging conceptions of the body, stillness, and the "ceremony of trust" (as Halprin named it) between performers and audience.
And, the not so everyday moves of DIAVOLO... The unusual and death defying moves of the Diavolo Dance Theater will perform several pieces to the live beats of Destructo, a first time collaboration. Expect the unexpected as the acrobatic dancers execute a dance spectacle, creating abstract narratives through surreal tableaux through athletic movements, surrealistic sets and everyday items repurposed to create visual and movement metaphors about the absurdities of life and the struggle to maintain our humanity in an increasingly technological world.
