THIS WEEK in L.A.

I like to try new things and this weekend I'm going to extremes. First I'm going to see the opera in New York. I didn't know that the Metropolitan Opera offers live HD simulcasts of its performances in local cinemas until a friend asked if I'd like to go this Saturday morning to see Puccini's Turandot.  Why not? It's only 20 bucks, a cheap opera opportunity and if I hate it.... Then I found out it runs almost 3 and a half hours (holy numb butts). No matter this is one of the shortest operas this season and there will be two intermissions - I hope they have lots of popcorn.  Look for it at a cinema near you this Saturday at 10am.

Then I'm going to travel back in time to the mid 19th century. The Blue and The Gray, an annual Civil War reenactment in Moorpark (Ventura County), offers battle reenactments, military encampments, period arts and crafts, and a living history lesson Saturday and Sunday.

Now that Halloween is over, the holidays loom ahead almost too close for comfort. Get a preview of what's ahead in this year's Eye Spy LA Holiday Guide.

Congrats to recent ticket winners in Eye Spy LA ticket drawings: Kamesha W., who went to see the Spazmatics at the Conga Room, and Lenore M. who won a pair of tickets this week to see Milton Nascimento at the Conga Room. Not everything happens on the weekend, don't miss out on future contests and ticket offers,

DANCE IN LA - Previews
by Kelly Hargraves

HEADS UP FOR TWO SPECIAL DANCE EVENTS: Anna Halprin's 1965 masterwork parades & changes, replays at REDCAT. Diavolo Dance Theater brings acrobatic spectacle to the Greek.

Halprin at REDCATEverything Old is New Again Anna Halprin's 1965 masterwork parades & changes, replays.

REDCAT presents this full-scale reinterpretation of Anna Halprin's game- changing landmark of postmodern dance, where dancers improvise based on a set of movement and music scores, carrying out everyday tasks, like dressing and undressing, all the while inventing new gestures and movements. In 2009, it doesn't sound so groundbreaking but in 1965 the original piece was censored when it premiered in New York due to its frank treatment of nudity, challenging conceptions of the body, stillness, and the "ceremony of trust" (as Halprin named it) between performers and audience.

DIAVOLO DANCE THEATERAnd, the not so everyday moves of DIAVOLO...
The unusual and death defying moves of the Diavolo Dance Theater will perform several pieces to the live beats of Destructo, a first time collaboration. Expect the unexpected as the acrobatic dancers execute a dance spectacle, creating abstract narratives through surreal tableaux through athletic movements, surrealistic sets and everyday items repurposed to create visual and movement metaphors about the absurdities of life and the struggle to maintain our humanity in an increasingly technological world.
