CAFEChairMessage from Allen S. Taylor - CAFE Canada Chair

2010 was a year of transition and accomplishment for CAFE Canada. As an organization, we managed our affairs effectively, particularly given the departure of our CEO. Credit must be given to our staff, and in particular to Lorraine Bauer our Interim-CEO, for seeing us through these challenging times. As the national arm of this association, we demonstrated value and provided needed services and support to our chapters. Symposium in Regina and the last cycle of the Family Enterprise of the Year Achievement Award were critical successes in terms of outreach, sharing experience, and brand building. The refinement and development of marketing materials for all chapters to access was in some sense a milestone in terms of the potential that collaborative activities might have for us in the future. And in an economic environment that was less than stellar, some might say that we weathered that storm reasonably well.

The year was not without its difficulties, however, and it is in regard to them that I am most concerned about the future. CAFE is more than 25 years old, and yet, its fundamental structure and strategy to reach and serve members remains essentially unchanged. This approach certainly worked in our early years and we had success growing and engaging the members of the day. Growth and engagement are not terms I can use to universally describe CAFE today. Membership is declining, participation at events and workshops is waning, and the market is becoming crowded with alternatives and substitutes for what CAFE has to offer.

If we want to succeed, it is time to change the model.

For years we have operated as silos across the country, each chapter building its version of a CAFE value proposition and with most of us duplicating efforts and reinventing the wheel on basic membership components. Today, we represent a collection of fractured voices, weakened because we haven't learned to harness the strength and opportunities that fuller collaboration and a more centralized organization would provide. In terms of association models, published and anecdotal research has proven that our model doesn't work for national associations. So looking forward, the board of CAFE Canada will need to choose between a road towards status quo, or a road towards change.

In modest steps towards that kind of change, CAFE Canada has made some progress of late: We have at least attempted to form some collaborative projects and collective solutions to common issues. And we have begun a staffing review that will result in a new and more robust staffing model, allowing CAFE Canada to do more and do better. What is in our favour is that those who CAFE has touched believe in us the most. We have some tremendous support in the form of sponsor relationships as well. So we have a basic position in the market to build upon. I am excited and ever hopeful that the board of CAFE Canada will serve this organization and it members across Canada well by continuing with their valuable contributions of time and expertise. On behalf of all CAFE members, I would like to thank each of them for their service.

Thank you.

Registry of Business Advisors

The Registry of Advisors (part of the CAFE website) provides a "shop window" for a professionals services. CAFE does the initial credential, background and reference checking of an applicant to ensure that they are bona fide accredited members of their specialist field and that they have the experience necessary to mediate and work within the Family Business environment.

The registry of advisors page is a public forum and therefore the shop window is open to more than the membership - indeed a google search for family business Canada will bring up CAFE on the first page.

For those businesses wanting a more active role in CAFE certainly membership is the way to go. For members the registry is a one time set up fee of only $25. (The $250 non member charge is an annual fee).

Please note also that while CAFE does the initial screening, members and the public are advised that there is no endorsement of a registry member. Businesses should interview potential advisors for the best fit for their family business and situation.
