The Colour of Success in Your Succession Plan: why green matters
Studies indicate that until 2025 there will be more people wanting to sell businesses than there will be buyers. If you are thinking about selling your business in the next 15 years, are you ready? Do you have a succession plan or exit strategy? Is it on the back of an envelope, or in your head? Or does this whole topic give you <<boomer-angst>> complete with indigestion? Having a formal plan is a good idea and this is one of the areas where CAFE, the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise, can help. Here's the twist: if you have not considered the environmental risks or green attributes
Until recently, unless you were a by-product of Woodstock who stuck to your beliefs, the 'environmental issue' was more often considered as a 'feel good thing to do' after you'd made your money. However, there is evidence that proves greening your business can save you money, reduce risks, add to your profit by 66% or more, and single your business out as a more attractive acquisition in a field of many.

3rd Generation CAFE members sought for SFU Study
Simon Fraser University is looking for family business members who have successfully made a transition to 3rd Generation ownership. This study is to discover the best practices that family businesses have utilized in both their business and the family.
We intend to develop a model that integrates what is known about successful families with what is known about successful businesses. As a result, the study begins with an act of faith: namely, that family business can be good for families and that business families can be good for business. We make this assumption based on personal experiences, anecdotal evidence and evidence from recent doctoral research that suggests the longevity of multigenerational family businesses in Germany comes from mutually enhancing synergies between family and business systems. If your family business has managed a transfer of ownership to the 3rd Generation we would appreciate an opportunity to discuss our research proposal with you. The results are intended to assist other family Business owners with stories and principles that will aid them in their succession planning. The study is being conducted by Dr Gervase Bushe of Simon Fraser University and Dr Ian Macnaughton M.B.A., Ph.D. principal with Ian Macnaughton & Associates Inc. Ian Macnaughton, is an executive coach, organizational consultant, and psycho-therapist in private practice. He has an extensive business background and has taught at Langara College, B.C.I.T., S.F.U. and U.B.C.
Interested families, please contact Dr Macnaughton at 604-681-4599 or email ian@macnaughton.ca.
That's all for now, please continue send you submissions and requests for upcoming newsletters to us here at CAFE Canada
All the best!
