Workplace Violence Prevention - An Employers Responsibility

Assessing the Risks of Workplace Violence Under Bill 168
There may be some of our members who are not familiar with legislative  obligations  to protect employees against various forms of violence regardless of the jurisdiction. This is particularly the case here in Ontario where the Occupational Health and Safety Act has recently Changed (June 15, 2010) placing a greater onus on employers to have a comprehensive violence prevention program.

Under Bill 168, employers are required to assess the risks of violence that may arise from the nature of the workplace, the type of work or the conditions of work. Measures and procedures to control these risks must then be developed as part of the workplace violence program. This Feature article written by Glenn French CEO and President of the Canadian Initiative on Workplace Violence will help you to better understand these new requirements.

Succession Planning in Family Businesses: India vs. North America

Purva Kansal is an Assistant Professor from University Business School, Panjab University India and is currently in Toronto to collect data for a project on "Succession Planning in Family Businesses: India Vs North America".

The project is aimed at better understanding the decision making processes utilized by senior executives regarding the retirement process. Questions deal with issues such as: personal well-being and development, wealth transfer, continuity and viability of the enterprise, ownership transfer and organizational governance, leadership succession and development, and familial relationships.

The project needs to collect data from minimum 250 family business CEOs. The survey requires 15 min of the respondent and has been uploaded (in a very user friendly format) at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FBRetirementsurvey

The results are being presented at FFI conference in Chicago in Oct 2010. We thank you for your assistance.

Symposium Keynote Frank O'Dea selected as Judge

 Champions

CBC and Outpost Magazine have launched a six-month search for the Top Canadian volunteers, Canada's Champions of Change. And, they have named the entrepreneur, speaker and humanitarian, Frank O'Dea, as the Chair of the panel of judges who will select the finalists for this Canada-wide, people's choice award.  More

Do you know someone who volunteers? Perhaps it is someone who collects door to door for charities; works in a soup kitchen; digs wells in Africa or pushes wheel chairs at the local hospital? Here is your chance to give him or her some well deserved recognition. Go to the CBC website Champions and fill out a nomination form, then get your colleagues and friends to do the same.

Because of its grass-roots nature and people's choice aspect, this is likely to go viral as whole organizations get behind their own "champions". This has the potential to be very big.

Enjoy the rest of your Summer!
