SUMMER READING ?

Effective Leaders

EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP
Craig E. Aronoff, Ph.D.. &
Otis W Baskin, Ph.D.

Is aimed at helping business-owning families understand and implement the extra dimensions of leadership that family firms require. Leadership is about action. This book is less concerned with developing the potential to lead than with the process of leadership itself and ways to improve it. It will be especially useful to you if you have leadership responsibilities in a business-owning family or in the business itself, if you are parents preparing the next generation for leadership, or if you are among those who aspire to leadership.

Welcome to CAFE's Canadian E-News
Greetings!

CAFE Canada has launched a quarterly newsletter to keep our members up to date on important issues from across Canada. For future editions, we invite Family members  to submit their business story. We also welcome business advice and articles from Associate members in every CAFE chapter

Please enjoy this first issue!
From the CAFE Canada Board Chair

As I come to the end of my term as Chair of the CAFE Board I want to thank everyone for their support and for this opportunity.  During my time on the board our association has undergone significant change.  Our new governance structure, with equal representation from each chapter, allows the board to express the will of our association.  The ability of each chapter to have a direct voice and say has created trust where it was lacking.  Strategic decisions can now be made and enacted through our CEO and professional staff.

Of particular note:
  • Online Directory
  • French Content for website
  • Family Enterprise of the Year National Sponsors
  • The Canadian Family Business Magazine launch
  • A new PAG manual
  • Partnership with Family Business Wiki

We are making significant progress as an association although I appreciate there is much more work to be done.  As my term draws to an end I am excited to pass the torch to Allen Taylor, who will take over as Chair at our October meeting of the Board.  We realize that CAFE must continue to evolve to meet our needs and expectations.  I encourage everyone to get involved, share your passion and support our organization.  You and the organization will be the better for it!

At a luncheon held at the Rosewater Supper Club in Toronto on Thursday May 28th the Bragg Group of Companies was awarded the Family Enterprise of the Year Award by the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise. The awards, sponsored by KPMG Enterprise and RBC Royal Bank are given in recognition of significant achievement within a family enterprise.
The lunch featured the family stories of the Bragg Group together with finalists Pizza Nova (GTA Chapter) and Jarlette Health Services (Georgian Bay Chapter). Both were winners within their own chapters of the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise. The winners from across Canada were celebrated at the event which also featured an inspirational message of achievement through hard work and family support from two time Olympic Gold medallist Cheryl Pounder.
The Bragg Group of Companies grew through generations from the local lumber yard to a multinational corporation whose portfolio demonstrates diversity with the core strengths of developing personnel and community involvement. "In a small town - population 1000 - probably every member of the community has worked for the Bragg Group at some point in their life. Many went on to make working for the family their career" said Matthew Bragg speaking on behalf of the family.
"For five generations, the Bragg Family has upheld a world class reputation that permeates throughout the entire organization," said Beth Wilson, Canadian Managing Partner for KPMG Enterprise. "We congratulate the Bragg Group on their success and hail their achievement to be named Family Enterprise of the Year."
