In Fall 2010, the Pacific Northwest Canned Pear Service (PNCPS) made family outreach into a fun and fanciful national art contest. Working through mommy bloggers and contest websites, the PNCPS announced the opportunity for kids to "Play With Your Pears" to win one of two $1,000 certificates for school and art supplies from Smilemakers.com. Kids from across the country grabbed a can of canned pears and headed for the kitchen table to create amazing works of art.
Kids, parents and the PNCPS communicated on Facebook, where fans of all ages exchanged ideas and recipes. At the end of the contest (December 2010), the winners were posted on the community Facebook page and eatcannedpears.com/kids.
Milana, a talented 10-year-old, won the 5-12 age group category with her "Great Pearisian Chef." In the 13-18 age group, a clever 14-year-old named Emily took the prize with her colorful, pear-centric rendering of a turkey. Both winners received four $250 Smilemakers.com certificates, and shared their prizes with community organizations. Judges evaluated entries based on creativity (40%), edible appeal (20%), and artistic execution (40%).
