 What's Happening at the Capitol

The education committees have been meeting and hearing various bills.  SEE has generated a listing of the Education Funding and Policy Bills - 2008 Legislative Session.   These are education bills that have been introduced.  The committee chair determines which bills will be heard in committee.

The House and Senate Education Finance Committees are finalizing their recommendations of the education bonding projects that should be included in the overall bonding bill and will continue to hear other bills in the coming week.

Apparently, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) notified school districts last week that changes have been made in how the MDE calculates the special education aid.  Districts are finding out that they will receive significantly less than was originally projected.   The state needs to stop manipulating the way it reimburses our schools for the special education mandate and pay the actual costs as they are incurred.

This re-calculation by the MDE intensifies the need for the HF2978/SF2815 bill which is referred to as the education "emergency" bill because it would provide financial relief for our schools next year by increasing the general education formula by a total of 3% and boosting the funding for special education.

The legislators and state leaders are bracing for the February state forecast which is to be released next Thursday, February 28.  It is expected that the current state deficient of $375 million dollars could significantly increase.

If you would like more information, visit Brad's Blog.  Brad Lundell, executive director of SEE, writes a blog which he updates almost daily with detailed information of what is happening at the capitol.

 What You Can Do

1.  Make  a visit to the capitol.  It is important for education supporters to have a presence at the capitol.  Your legislators need to hear from you about the importance of our public schools.  Don't hesitate to contact me if you are at all interested in making a trip to the capitol.  I'd be happy to meet you or help you in any way.

2.  Attend the Parent Leadership Summit on April 7.  This is a great opportunity for parents and education supporters to network with other parents from around the state and discuss ways that we can advocate for our schools.  Click here for more information and the summit flyer and to register.

 SEE Regional Meetings

SEE's Regional Meeting are coming soon.  At regional meetings, Brad Lundell and myself meet with SEE members at various locations.  Brad is both interesting and entertaining as he updates everyone on the legislative session.  We welcome members of local Legislative Action Coalitions, parents and education supporters from SEE districts.  Pick one that works for you.  We hope to see you there!
