Last week's headlining photographer was Ann E. Moller. The image above was recently seen in APG's "Airport Show." Many thanks to Ann for letting us crop her photo in the previous newsletter!

A little bit about Ann ....

"Hidden Pictures, textiles, pottery and geometry, all loves of  Ann E. Moller,  combine elements to realize themselves in Ann's photography. Having graduated from Chicago's Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, Ann's eventual work as a mental health RN, particularly at Ridgeview Institute caring for Dissociative Identity Disorder patients, also drives her image expression.  Her interest in textiles arose from an aunt's introduction to the 1950's lavish, Chicago fabric remnant houses, a magnificent resource for Ann's favored Vogue patterns in sewing and tailoring courses.

At Spruill and Chastain community art centers, Ann has studied Sumi-e painting, color theory, drawing, watercolor painting, pottery making and glass fusing.  Mentor, Virginia Twinam Smith, introduced Ms. Moller to Atlanta's Women in Focus and the Atlanta Photography Group where for over ten years she has regularly exhibited work juried by gallerists Jane Jackson, curator of the Elton John photography collection, Anna Skillman of Jackson Fine Art, Naomi Silva, Fay Gold, Benjamin Krause, and Mark Karelson, director of Mason Murer, and Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia director, Annette Cone-Skelton.  Ann's work has been shown at the Swan Coach House Gallery under the direction of Marianne Lambert, and Ann's images can be seen in the ongoing exhibitions at the Kathleen Tomer Gallery at Northside Decorating of Roswell.

Atlanta Photography Group critique leader Chip Simone and its members are enduring support and guidance in Ms. Moller's work."

Juror Statement from Dr. Anthony Bannon

Director George Eastman House

Finally, at the end of the day, this selection was about light. In particular, it is light in those moments of change - between day and night, between the presence and the absence, perhaps in and out of the shadow. The pictures in the Portfolio Exhibition often hold a good bit about what is meant by these things: by the shadow, this is, for better or for worst; by the disparity between what can be seen in the light and cannot be seen through the darkness; or by the expectation of all that is held within these instances of difference.
So here are rich propositions, loaded, and skillfully expressed, fluent in the rhetoric's, the figures, and the tropes that make meaning full and fun: parts standing for wholes, for example, as well it must be in photography.  There are fine opportunities here for establishing the idiosyncratic, and attention given to the prime axiom of art, namely the unique experience.
The reader should know that happily I would have selected at least one image by everyone who submitted. But that was not in the agreement.  Our bargain was to search for groups of pictures that make sense together, that went some distance toward establishing that language special to the particular artist, the artist's proposition of a well-tempered portfolio.  Such a portfolio would be committed to a higher purpose, a significance, whether aesthetic or social. Either way.
It was not difficult to identify the artists whose work gathered the necessary critical mass. So the math was straight-forward and tidy.
Still, the remorse - the juror's remorse - remains: Each artist who submitted had vision, each proposed new challenges, some just more boldly, more articulately, more thoroughly than others. Those that were selected seemed to look, really look (rather than glance), as if with new eyes. -Anthony Bannon

"There are places in the world that are so beautiful, they deserve to stay that way. Jan's pinhole photos of Ossabaw Island remind me of these places. When you walk through these landscapes you become at peace with yourself and your surroundings. You begin to hear the sound of the trees swaying in the wind, birds chirping and the sound of the surf in the distance. Mixed in with the Ossabaw Island photos are some inspired Pinhole Blender photos. I enjoy how Jan creates visual narrative which makes me think of poetry I've read. Thank you Jan, it is an honor and a pleasure to have your words and photos part of this series. Keep those visual poems coming!" -Chris Keeney, CK Pinhole Photography, Monthly Featured Pinhole Photographers

 proudly presents
Photography Scavenger Hunt Invitational

The Grand Prize winner of this competition will be named the
Artist Trifecta Photographer of the Year 2010

It's time for the next Photography Scavenger Hunt and this time we are going
to mix it up a bit! Starting at noon on December 4th, we are going to have a 24 hour race to take pictures of 12 clues. All of the rules and usual information still applies, but with all of the suggestions that I have been given by participants, we are mixing it up a bit this time!

CLUES
You get to help comprise the list of clues! I've been told that my clues can be a bit tough, so we started tossing about a few suggestions over lunch after the Centennial Park unveiling. I want you to think of as many clues as you would like to add to the list. Here are the beginnings....

«      Self portrait
«      Ticket stub
«      Out-of-towners
«      Height
«      Street level
«      Recreating a movie scene
«      Night shot
«      Sunrise shot
«      Ho ho ho
«      Nude
«      Landscape
«      Christmas song
«      One of Santa's helpers that didn't make the cut
«      The new gallery space

I would like for everyone to contribute as many clues as you would like. I will then compile the entire list and let all involved vote for their 12 favorites on December 2nd. This will give everyone the chance to go ahead and think about the composition, place and models involved in the shots....however, the final list of 12 clues will not be given until the day of the contest.

CHECK POINTS
We are also adding three check points during the 24 hour race. Our locations manager will be waiting for all of the photographers at each location with a prop that will need to be included in your pictures and an adult beverage. At each check point you will be given a riddle to decode that will give you the next checkpoint and time.

LIFELINE
Everyone will be given one lifeline. When you get stumped on something, you will have one opportunity to call me and ask for help.

WILDCARD
You get to include 3 extra images. Due to the amount of comments of "but I had another one that was so good I wish I could have used it too," I am opening it up to the inclusion of your 3 wildcards. Not required, but it will allow you to present multiple images for one clue.

PITCH A TENT
By the 4th, the interior of the gallery will look like a winter wonderland with the Christmas trees that will be brought in to be decorated. If you would like to pitch a tent and spend the entire time in the middle of it all, bring it on! We will also have the bocce ball and croquet courts completed by that time so it will give us a chance to have some break time and play.

SEC PLAYOFFS
I was reminded that the SEC playoffs will also be happening that day at the Dome. Traffic and people will be at a maximum for our shots. The COP crowd will love any pictures you can get that are FULL of people. For those of you who had a chance to talk with Joe and Christina, focusing on the people and activities are more important to them than broad landscape shots. They want to see the vibrancy of the people.

SPONSORS
Once again we have a lot of great sponsors on board with us....Centennial Olympic Park, Wine Shoe, Easter Seals & Fashion Uncorked with others joining in by the day of. I am going to have each of them give story ideas of the shots they would like to see to help you in creating the winner similar to a description that an ad agency would give you.

THE END
The race will conclude at noon on the 5th at the gallery (106 Walker Street SW). For anyone who would like to wrap up the competition with lunch and an adult beverage, we will walk over to No Mas Cantina for food, drinks and discussion!

FEE
$75. This time the fee is being raised a bit to help cover the adult beverages and other fun things. I am also including the printing fee of fifteen 8x10s. To reserve your spot come by the gallery or send a check to Artist Trifecta, 339 Nelson Street, Atlanta, GA 30313 by December 1. You have to reserve your spot and paid before the 1st  or your package will not created for you!

I WANNA!
I have been wanting to participate since the very first one so this time I will be out there in the trenches with you. I will be playing fair...don't worry...although I have already lined up the models, equipment trucks and special effects...just joking. My pictures will not be eligible for judging and I will still have to do all of the behind the scenes work too. I have been told that I need to experience the adrenaline rush of trying to figure out the clues and getting the best shots. I experienced that a bit in Detroit when Pip gave me my list of 12 clues and then thirty minutes later the pedal fell of the bike that I had borrowed. The pressure can be intense!

KNOW OF OTHERS TO INVITE?
If you have any friends who are masters at their craft and would like to participate, have them contact me!

If you have any questions, give me a call! I hope you are available to participate!

Cheers,
Amanda Brown
