"Back Home" Robert A. Myers
Last week's headlining photographer was Robert A. Myers. Bob's photograph, "Back Home," was taken in an abandoned mansion near Madison, Georgia, and can be seen in APG's "Annette Cone-Skelton Selects," currently showing until November 12th in the APG Gallery.
A little bit about Bob....
Bob's lifelong interest in photography was rekindled with the advent of the digital camera. The ability to polish an image quickly and easily, without the mess and expense of a darkroom, opened up a world of creative expression that would not have otherwise been possible. Consequently, he leaped into the new medium with great enthusiasm. With a background in engineering, Bob brings the eye of a technician to much of his art. Mix in a bit a photojournalism, and stories emerge from the abandoned places that he is drawn to.
Bob's work has hung in numerous juried exhibitions in the Atlanta area, including the 2009 Paulding Fine Arts Show where he won Best of Show.
You can see more of Bob's work here.

DID YOU MISS THE JANE JACKSON TALK WITH CHIP SIMONE? This APG event drew a standing room only crowd, including some later guests listening in from the doorway. During the one and a half hour talk, Ms. Jackson began with her early experience as a photography dealer in Atlanta, at a time when gallery visitors would repeatedly ask the same question... "Why is photography art?" Hard to imagine these days. She also spoke about the changing face of Atlanta photography, which started with a small, tight-knit group of photographers, but has grown to a widespread community over 20 years later. Now, photographers are so abundant, it's more challenging to stand out, especially when the internet broadcasts photography from all over the world. The most enlightening fact she shared with the group is the question that the big name galleries are now asking of prospective photographers... "Where did you receive your MFA?" This prompted a discussion that explores what higher education means for a photographer these days. And of course, everyone wanted to know about Ms. Jackson's experience in working with Sir Elton John. She spoke of her experience in acquiring photography for the world famous performer, including the subject matter he prefers, his changing taste, and his independent search for new photography to add to his collection. Thanks to Chip Simone for leading this thought-provoking and informative evening.

MEET "THE SPOTLIGHT GUY"
As promised in a previous newsletter, we have a new feature which focuses on various photographers at APG who allow the camera to be turned on themselves momentarily. In "APG Member Spotlights," they share their work, their philosophy, and their experiences in the field. Richard Ediger not only suggested this new feature, but took the bull by the horns and decided to write the articles as well! Richard is an active member of APG and can often be seen around town visiting galleries, lectures and events, in addition to showing his own work in several venues. Richard also has a blog titled, "Random Radiance," that focuses on photography in Atlanta, and in many instances, the events taking place at APG. "Member Spotlights" will be produced on a semi-sometimes basis and aims to be informative and inspiring, while putting a name to the faces we see around APG.

Zoo Atlanta was the setting for this interview which took place on a picture-perfect October morning. Fitting for this photographer whose love of animals from an early age has enabled her to capture much more than just a pretty picture. The empathy she feels for her subjects is felt throughout her work and is deepened by her working experience in animal conservation. She points out that sharing empathy with the animals we experience around us, enriches our own lives, for "the animals ask questions for which there are no easy answers, but silently they are asking us to consider them."
