(92-93+) POINTS, WINE ADVOCATE:

"Liger-Belair's 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges. - vinified one-third vendange entier; tasted from barrel; and not due to be bottled until June - is densely-concentrated and tannic, but fine-grained. Its contrast of bright blackberry and red fruit with rich, roasted but rare red meat is striking and saliva-stimulating. Tobacco, crushed stone, dark chocolate, peat, and new leather add to the complexity on display in this formidable yet vintage-typically enervating Pinot, one that should merit 15 or more years of cellaring."

Wine Advocate # 189, June 2010

THE STORY:

Thibault Liger-Belair is a young man who is serious about his craft. He carries himself with an air of confidence and passion, and these characteristics show well when tasting his wines.

Thibault owns a massive 2.1 hectare plot of the top 1er Cru 'les Saint Georges' - which many consider to be the Grand Cru of Nuits-st-Georges.  The vines are planted on deep calcareous solis, very stony which create rich and structured wines, built for ageing.

Thibault was trained as an oenologist but had his start in the wine industry as a wine buyer. After his years of being involved in the wine world discussing wine-making techniques and philosophies with some of the best winemakers of the world, it became clear to Thibault what he wanted to accomplish. In 2002 he established the estate under his own name.

Thibault has a strong focus of what he wants to achieve in the vineyard and with his wines.  His viticulture is entirely organic and biodynamic and his yields are extremely low.  Thibault believes most of the work with his wines is done in the vineyard and his efforts certainly show in the wines. Each of his selections has a separate character and Thibault believes in letting the grapes speak for themselves.  Nothing special is done to enhance their upbringing - they are grown the way nature intended.  His down-to-earth philosophy in the vineyard and cellar ensures that the wines received necessary attention, but are not mishandled, and the proof is in the bottle.  Thibault's wines are pure, bright, focused and elegant, with a quiet power.
