Wine Spectator notes of the 2007 vintage in Napa Valley for Cabernet Sauvignon:

Textbook growing year; small crop, ideal ripening, with scores of amazing wines defined by enormous complexity and plush tannins (99 points).
Harvest and Tasting notes:

October 26, 2010 - The growing season for 2007 was mixed with stretches of heat and cool periods, creating a wide span of harvests dates and delightful fruit characters in the vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon sites we farm organically, produced delicious flavors with harvest starting in late August at the Fifteen Forty Vineyard on the east side of Howell Mountain. By mid-September we had picked a little Rutherford, valley floor fruit but then after a cool down, had to wait until October for the remaining Rutherford and mountain vineyards to ripen. Included in the Howell Mountain Estate Vineyard was some of the first fruit from our replanted vines.

The growing conditions produced dark fruit flavors, very well balanced acids and tannins, and beautifully colored wines. This vintage is packed with intense fruit aromas of cherry, blackberry, cassis and sweet oak. Plus, there is sweetness to the intense fruit and oak flavors and a mouth watering, velvety structure from the tannins. The resulting character makes this a great vintage for enjoying now as well as aging.

Mark Neal can't really help but suffuse his family's wines with terroir. His father Jack Neal founded one of the Napa Valley's first vineyard management companies in 1968, and that company still farms nearly 2,000 acres of vineyards, from Coombsville to Calistoga.

From the winery's conception in 2001, Mark Neal has envisioned the union of farming Napa's most prized appellations and using the fruit from those vineyards to produce Napa Valley and vineyard-designated selections. To accomplish his goal, Mark took five years choosing site-specific rootstocks and clones and searching for blocks within vineyard sites that best expressed the true nature of Napa Valley grapes.  At the end Mark selected  8 superior vineyards blocks to produce his organic wine (Howell Mountain, Rutherford, Mount Veeder, Coombsville, Atlas Peak, and St. Helena).

Mark and his vineyard managers, Pedro Rubio and Gove Celio, have been refining their farming practices for many years. They all share the common goal of producing the superior grapes required to produce quality wines. Mark began making wine from the Family vineyard in Rutherford in 1997, and each new season he begins the quest for a perfect vintage, accomplished through the unification of earth, vine, climate and cellar.

Neal Family Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet is succulent, generous and completely on point, a rich wine possessing fine, pristine tannins to give the wine grip and precision.  Each selection produced by Neal Family Vineyards are made in very small quantities and are hard to come by. Today's featured Cabernet Sauvignon is a shared favorite amongst the Liquid Art Staff,  and we are happy that this wine flies under the radar. This means more for all of us; an 'insider's' cult wine, without the ridiculous price tag attached!
