Greetings!

Tina Gleisner and Dennis Turmel

At the beginning of the month I planned to focus on storage ideas for this months newsletter. A few weeks later and lots of unusual weather, made me realize I should also discuss the importance of our home's exterior, as that's what protects us from the weather.

Building codes guide the construction of new homes but many homes were built before building codes. As building codes get more stringent, they only apply to new homes as existing houses aren't required to "come up to code" until you make repairs or renovations. While you might save money now, repairs can far outweigh the cost of more timely maintenance and updates like a new roof before extensive water damage.

Okay, home maintenance isn't sexy or fun. That's why you have Mr. Handyman to handle these chores and implement a strategy to reduce your exposure to unusual weather like flooding, high winds, ice and snow plus extended cold spells across the US.

Storage is one of those things we could talk about forever. As we're citizens of a consumer driven economy, we are always buying things which then need a place to call home. From bookcases to window seats and everything in between, we've got fun ideas to share with you.

We hope to hear from you,

   Tina and Dennis

Preventing Problems Before an Emergency

Your home maintenance strategy reflects your personality and your lifestyle. There are lots of homeowners who know they could figure out how to replace a floor board in the deck or get the ladder out and clean the gutters. We know you can do it, the problem is we've all got too many responsibilities and too little time, so the things we like doing the least, simply don't get done.

Why Did My Water Pipes Freeze?

Water temperatures drop, water freezes it expands and in a pipe it might burst the pipe depending on the amount of pressure. When plumbing pipes burst, water escapes and goes in many directions with a good chance there will be serious damage and repairs needed. The worst case is when the pipe bursts inside a wall, where you can hear it but can't see it.

Learn more about freezing pipes... and if you need help shutting off the water in your home, we've also got an article, Home Emergencies: Shutting Off the Water.

Use the 2010 Remodeling Trends to Pick Your Projects

Remodeling a home is a great alternative to selling your existing home and moving. Remodeling means you get to remain in your community, the children don't have to change schools and your lives might be uprooted a bit during the actual remodeling project but afterward, you're able to continue with the routines you love like walking the dog, bike rides and more.

If you feel your home is lacking, prioritize what's missing and pick a remodeling project that will give you great payback when you sell. Learn more here...
