Greetings!
Tina Gleisner and Dennis Turmel
Writing this newsletter is fun and I enjoy sharing my knowledge of homes and how to take care of them. At the same time, I don't want to take myself too seriously ... so I decided to arrive in costume this month.

Our feature article focuses on the community and shares Halloween facts and figures. There are ideas for enjoying your community this time of year and Halloween!

Now let's get honest, who's finished their fall home maintenance checklist? Or even started on their projects? I've been too busy, and likely you have too. Maybe we all need to call Mr/My Handyman for that extra pair of hands?

Our focus this month is on using the federal energy tax credits before they expire at the end of the year (tax credit details). If you haven't started switching to CFLs, you won't after a choice soon - as incandescent light bulbs are being phased out in 2012.

Remember that home maintenance is more critical now that we're staying in our homes longer, typically 8 to 10. Issues we relied on home inspections to find are being delayed and that's not good. You can avoid higher repair costs by finding and fixing your home's problems now.

Happy Halloween!

Tina and Dennis

October is fire prevention month. The statistics aren't great but there's hope. The number of fires has decreased with more focus on fire safety along with products that are fire resistant. Smoke detectors are a big factor in reducing fires and deaths related to fires.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) continues to focus on improvements to the products which cause the most fires and loss of life. These products include home heating appliances, furniture, bedding and clothing must now meet fire safety standards. Learn more about fire safety at home ...

Universal Design: Tips to Stay Home Forever

senior safety at homeWith all the emphasis today on saving energy and going green, most people aren't aware of another trend in home design. It's happening but you might not notice unless you're learning about universal design. With an aging population, the construction industry is paying a lot of attention and so are manufacturers of home appliances.

Universal design refers to the design of products and the home or "built environment" that is usable by all people, to the degree possible, without the need for adaptation.

CFL or incandescent light bulbs save energyCompact Florescent Light bulbs

Why are there so many different types of light bulbs? Are they all the same? Not really. Traditional, incandescent light bulbs - as pictured on the left waste 90% of the energy consumed producing heat, not light! Unless you intend to heat your home with light bulbs, it is time to change out your bulbs.
