What's All This Talk About Earnings Multiples?

 
How many times have you heard another business owner talk about selling a business for five times, six times or whatever times earnings? Quite a few, I'd imagine. As M&A specialists, two of the questions that we often hear from prospective clients are "What is the market multiple?" and "Can I get the same multiple as someone else (either named or unnamed) got when I sell my business?"

My recent discussions with merger and acquisition advisors, private equity firms and M&A attorneys all point to a slight increase in business buyer interest over the past three months.  That said, while some business owners are starting to refocus on exiting their businesses, the vast majority are still hunkered down or don't believe they will be able to receive a strong valuation in this market.  The fact is, companies with strong growth and profit margins are in demand and command solid valuations.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Federal Reserve officials meeting this week must weigh improving economic data against the risk, reinforced by a persistently weak job market, that a burgeoning recovery remains on shaky ground.
