September 2009 - Economic Stabilization, Recovery or What?

It appears that both the domestic and global economies have entered a period of stability after a fairly large decline. There have been strong rallies in both the equity and debt markets. Many true believers are declaring that the global financial crisis is over!

"Green shoots" seem to have cropped up everywhere. It's been widely publicized that there has been a slowdown in the rate of decline in key economic indicators, improvements in the financial system, strong government support for the banking system, interest rates near zero percent and, lastly, unprecedented fiscal stimulus packages. All these lead to hopes for a swift return to growth.

Mergers & Acquisitions

According to an August 25 Alliance of Merger & Acquisition Advisors survey, for the 12-month period ended June 30, 2009, the average transaction multiple across all industries for private transactions less than $100 million in size was 4.69 times earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA).

Many experienced merger & acquisition intermediaries will refuse to represent business owners who can't convincingly articulate what they are going to do in their lives post sale.  The reason is that these owners are less likely to follow through with the sales of their companies.
