IMBD 2011 Materials a Hit

We've already received many  positive reviews of the IMBD 2011 materials and appreciate your responses.  In 2010, we distributed all of the posters and anticipate doing the same this year.  Over 10,000 posters have already shipped, so if you're planning on making them available at your event, please get us your request soon.Caribbean

The annual t-shirt premiered in the Caribbean, during a shorebird monitoring training workshop.  At the same time, educators received IMBD materials to use at upcoming Caribbean Endemic Bird Festivals and future IMBD events.

This year's [t-shirt] design is quite different from previous years, and has gotten great reviews locally.    Cheryl Carrothers, USFS

And the IMBD 2011 Education Booklet is flying out the door.  This handy little education booklet has over 20 pages of information and activities, all focusing on birds.  Topics include What is a Bird, the Birder's Code of Ethics, Bird Behaviors, and Taking Action to Conserve Birds.  It is recommended for ages 6 - 11 and is a great complement to education stations.

Connecting People to Nature Through Birds

StudentEnvironment for the Americas has the privilege of working with staff at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Conservation Training Center Division of Education Outreach to lead a 4-day course called Connecting People with Nature through Birds.

The purpose of this course is to help educators, biologists, and volunteers gain confidence and skills in connecting people with birds through a variety of bird-focused programs. Every level of birder can gain new techniques, ideas, and activities. This is NOT a bird identification course.  Rather, we focus on about a dozen species for practicing birding skills and teaching techniques.

The full 4-day course is scheduled for June 6-9, 2011 at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, WV.

Do you work or volunteer with US Fish and Wildlife Service?  If so, you may be eligible for a scholarship from the Friends of the NCTC Scholarship Program to attend the course.

IMBD 2012 Theme Results
wind turbine Even though we've just begun celebrating IMBD 2011, it's time to plan for 2012.  Your votes on the 2012 IMBD theme determined that our next focus will be on the benefits and impacts of alternative energy on birds.  At the same time, we know that you want us to keep the event and its materials positive and engaging.  While we strive to provide solid scientific information, we also understand the need for a celebration.

Other themes that were considered include a focus on migration, invasive species and their effects on migratory birds, and an exploration of interesting bird behaviors.

Planning for 2012 is already underway, but we always appreciate your comments and suggestions!
