Do you know a hero?
Our Jewish community is partnering with United Jewish Communities and other organizations across the country to help recognize unsung heroes-men and women of all ages who place the needs and concerns of others above their own.

We have signed on to this exciting Jewish Community Heroes campaign, which launched on August 3rd. People across North America will nominate heroes from their individual communities, then vote on-line through October at www.jewishcommunityheroes.org for those who best embody the principles of tzedakah and tikkun olam. Voters will help narrow the field to five finalists, one of whom will go on to receive the Jewish Community Hero of the Year Award.

Each and every nominee will be recognized. The five finalists will be honored during the UJC General Assembly in Washington, D.C., in November. All of the finalists and the contest winner will receive cash awards to enable them to continue their work in the Jewish community.

Please visit http://jewishcommunityheroes.org/philadelphia and nominate those ordinary men and women who have made a tangible difference in the lives of others. Contact Lynn Edelman at 215-832-0639 for additional information.

A Project of Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia in Partnership with Jewish Outreach Partnership

Mitzvah Mania 2009

On Sunday, November 1, 2009, our Greater Philadelphia Jewish community volunteers will provide nourishment to the hungry, distribute clothes to low income families, winterize homes for older adults, clean-up neighborhood parks and participate in other mitzvot - the Hebrew word for good deeds.

Join these men, women and children for Mitzvah Mania '09 and help them to transform communities and change lives. The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia is sponsoring this 3rd annual social action event, chaired by Lana and Bernie Dishler, Jackie Needleman and David Cohen and Simi Kaplin Baer and Marc Baer. These three couples invite interested individuals, families and organizations to mark their calendars and make time to volunteer on November 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteer at the JCCs Klein Branch, Red Lion Road and Jamison Street, in Northeast Philadelphia; the JCC Stiffel Senior Center, Marshall and Porter Streets, in South Philadelphia; JCC Kaiserman, 45 Haverford Road in Wynnewood; Morris Park, 6900 Sherwood Road in Overbrook Park; and at synagogues and other sites throughout the Greater Philadelphia area.
