Greetings!

Chanukah is a holiday of miracles, a celebration of the survival of our ancestor's commitment to Judaism against great odds. Chanukah is a time of re- dedication to the power of our Jewish heritage and an opportunity for us to re-evaluate the compelling work that we do. As we light the menorah, and glimpse at the flames we create, we see the hope of a brighter future, providing inspiration for our daily lives and for the work that Women's Philanthropy and the Jewish Federation perform.

Save the Date- Super Sunday is January 25.
Super Sunday Pledges Have Power
Join hundreds of Jewish men and women on Sunday, January 25 for our community's largest phone-a-thon of the year. Together, we will raise the critical funds necessary to help the most vulnerable in our community.

Together, we will help send our children to Jewish summer camps - our teens to experience Israel - and we'll ensure that our elderly can live independently in their own homes. Together, we will make a difference as we address our most critical priorities in Philadelphia, Israel and overseas.

Help us demonstrate the collective power of a caring community through your support of Super Sunday. Child care will be available in the morning, food, fun and great company will be available throughout the day and evening.

Please mark your calendars now and find an hour or more to volunteer. Phone lines are open from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at the Jewish Federation's Radnor Campus, 272 Bryn Mawr Avenue, Bryn Mawr, PA.

New this year! Online training! Make the most of your Super Sunday by visiting our online training site at www.jewishphilly.org/supersunday. Follow the directions; print your certificate and you'll be set for the day. Super Sunday 2009 is being chaired by Holly and Norm Nelson & Cari and Alan Lasdon.
Annual Lion of Judah Luncheon
The annual Lion of Judah luncheon took place on October 7, 2008 at The Rittenhouse. Co-chaired by Lisa Goldenberg and Nancy Selarnick, this year's event theme was "Jewish Women- the Circle of our Lives" and was attended by 148 women. The event recognized seventy-five of our "Chai Lions", women who have been giving at the Lion of Judah Level for the past 18 years, as well as Beth Reisboard, the recipient of the 2008 Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award. In addition, the ladies heard from keynote speaker, Iris Krasnow.

Mitzvah Mania
Mitzvah Mania, November 2, 2008, may have come and gone but our appreciation continues.

Thank you to all Women's Philanthropy members who chaired and volunteered, who laughed and were great company, and who, most importantly, helped repair the world. Together, over 3,000 of us, young and old accomplished many good deeds. We:

  • Refurbished 10 homes for low income families
  • Packed 60 bags for Mitzvah Food Pantry
  • Assembled 1,000 Breakfast Bags, 150 Blizzard Bags, 150 Thanksgiving Baskets
  • Planted and prepped the Wellness Garden for JCCs Klein Branch seniors and Federation Housing residents to enjoy
  • Beautified Poquessing Park and created accessible paths for seniors

  • International Lion of Judah Conference
While we honor the participation of all our Women Philanthropists and while we know not all are able to participate at the Lion level, we did want to share with you our pride at some recent Lion events: a mini- mission and a Lion Conference, both in Israel this past November. Our pre-mission was chaired by the incredible Sharon Taffet, who, with the enormous help of the professional staff, crafted three fabulously fun days touring Israel. With guide Laura Nelson-Levy, we saw the Roman / Jewish town of Tzippori, toured the holy city of Safed, viewed the beautiful excavations in the Caesarea, walked the Western Wall Tunnels and of City of David and, of course, shopped on Ben Yehuda Street.
