Greetings!

Jewish people around the world are preparing for the New Year. Many are planning menus, inviting family and friends to share in the holiday meals, and attending High Holiday services. As women, many of us are getting our kids off to school, colleges, and other exciting programs. We are also starting new jobs, working on special projects and continuing to find time to volunteer and be engaged with the Jewish community.

"You can't know how to live until you learn how to give."
- Kirk Douglas, Moment Magazine, Sept. 2008

In interviewing Mary Relles, our featured Federation volunteer this month, she ended with the quote above. We actually introduce her with it, because, as she said, "Federation has given me the opportunity to live a meaningful life."

Jewish Federation not only gives its fundraising dollars to those in need in our area and abroad, but it also gives us, the volunteers, opportunities to learn, opportunities to give back, opportunities to participate in Tikun Olam.

Mitzvah Mania - Sunday, November 2, 2008

Did you know that last year, we, members of the Jewish Community of Greater Philadelphia made history: we had over 5,000 volunteers in one day improve the world and impact the lives of hundreds of people in our very own community. This year, history is repeating itself! And, we need you and your families to join us on Sunday, November 2, 2008. There is a huge choice of Tikkun Olam projects to select from including visiting senior centers, helping JRA with a clothing drive, grocery shopping with seniors, winterizing homes, and even rebuilding houses. For families with really small children there are art projects and clean/spruce up of the playground at Klein Branch including the "Wellness Garden" and the sandboxes at the Lassin Center.

Your newsletter editor, Jackie Needleman, is co- chairing the Fairmount Park project, and, she really needs your help! Please sign-up. This project in particular is designed for families with children ages seven and above to work together - first with a learning session (what is poison ivy to how to use gardening tools) then with hands-on raking, cleaning up invasive plants and planting new Pennsylvania native plants.

The specific area is Poquessing Water Shed Park in Fairmount Park where we will be creating a beautiful, native area for seniors. Additionally, Federation will be donating a bench for quiet enjoyment of our labors. To sign up, click here and put (WP) after your last name so we know you are part of Women's Philanthropy!

The International Lion of Judah Conference and Pre-Mission
November 9- 16, 2008

On Wednesday, November 12, twenty-one of our Philadelphia Lion of Judah donors will join close to 1000 Lions from around the world at the International Lion of Judah Conference in Tel Aviv. Prior to the conference, we will spend three days together exploring Tzippori, Safed and Caesarea. We will also be the first mission to visit the Cis Golder Garden at the Orr Shalom Home in Haifa. At last year's Lion of Judah Luncheon, the Philadelphia Lion of Judah donors raised over $50,000 to create a therapeutic garden in the memory of community leader, Cis Golder.

We are lucky to have Sharon Taffet as the Philadelphia Lion Mission Chair and we are excited to support our own Gail Norry as she Co-Chairs the International Lion of Judah Conference along with Renee Chelm.
Although Women's Philanthropy will be kicking off the 2009 campaign at the upcoming Lion of Judah Luncheon on October 7, we are also continuing to close the 2008 campaign.

To date we have raised $4,391,819 from 6745 donors representing an 8.4% increase.
