Greetings!

Spring is finally here! After a mild winter, it certainly seems like it has taken a while to really feel like spring. But the timing is perfect since it coincides with Passover, also known as Chag Ha'aviv, the holiday of spring. At the second seder, we begin counting the omer for seven weeks in anticipation of Shavuot and the receiving of the Torah. To me, both of these holidays have truly shaped us as a people. We were enslaved together, set free as a whole, and then experienced revelation as a nation. Each and every one of us still is obligated to remember that G-d set us free from our oppressors and then chose us to receive his laws and lead us to the Promised Land. We are commanded to remember and to carry on these traditions. Of course, since the destruction of the first Temple in 586 BCE, the Jewish People no longer lives in one place or travels together as a single unit. While this is only one of the many reasons why there are differences among our people today, it still places a much greater burden on each individual. For those of you who joined us at our annual gala on April 3rd, we saw Tiffany Shlain's documentary, "The Tribe" and heard her explanation of this modern day dilemma. While younger generations may have a different vision of their future, I believe that the bottom line is that we must each take responsibility for keeping the Jewish community as strong and united as possible. That is our goal as a Federation.

Jackie in Israel
Tzedkah has always been at the foundation of who I am. Growing up in a home with strong Jewish values, helping others was not a choice, it was a duty. My family didn't know any other way. My grandmother set the example each Shabbat when she filled her pushkie. Although she didn't have much, she knew there were those who were worse off than she and lived by the rules of tzedkah so that she could have a role in tikkun olam. It is often said that how we lead our lives sends a clear message to those around us. My grandparents and parents sent the message that giving back is our responsibility. Those principles were instilled in me as a child and have grown with me in adulthood. I am passing on similar values to my own children. Click here for more

Pomegranate Event: On March 12, 2008, over 50 generous Pomegranate Level women gathered at Boyd's downtown store for some serious "Guilty Pleasures". Okay, perhaps the pleasures didn't make us feel guilty, but they certainly were somewhat decadent and definitely amusing! During the event, chaired by Paula Glazer and Cari Lasdon, each woman was personally thanked for her contribution to Federation and treated to delicious finger food, welcoming company, and beautiful gift bags donated by Govberg Jewelers . Each bag included a box of Girl Scout cookies, pomegranate room freshener and jewelry cleaner. Most importantly, the crowd was brought to silence and awed appreciation when listening to the inspiring speech by Shelley Rappaport who shared her intimate, first-hand experience being helped by Federation. Author Ruth Andrew Ellison brought some much appreciated comic relief, relaying stories from her book "The Modern Jewish Girl's Guide to Guilt" . This is the perfect gift for Mother's Day or to recognize a favorite gal pal.

Live It Up! Gala
On April 3rd, over 300 women attended the Live it Up Gala at the Hilton Hotel. It was so nice to all be together! After a heart warming Federation message by our own Phylliss Finkelstein, filmmaker and keynote speaker, Tiffany Shlain, treated us to a showing of "The Tribe". This creative and highly acclaimed film compares the history of the Jewish people to the creation and assimilation of the Barbie doll and sheds light on the question: What does it mean to be an American Jew today? Ms. Shlain shared her experiences in making of the film and the overwhelming response she has received during screenings all over the world. Everyone enjoyed this thought provoking and fun evening. Over $160,000 was raised for the JFGP Jewish Community Fund .Wow! A big thank you to all those who brought personal care items for our Mitzvah Food Project. These items provide basic staples to community members in need in a caring and dignified manner. Big Congrats to our terrific chairs Simi Kaplin Baer, Phyllis Finkelstein, Tracy Gordon, Andrea Heffler, and Margelle Liss.

Louisiana: Recover, Rebuild, Rebirth.

On April 14th and 15th, 16 women from the Women's Philanthropy Leadership Development Group traveled to New Orleans on a jam-packed mini-mission. It would be an understatement to describe this experience as "powerful".

First hand, the group saw the collective power of Jewish Federations throughout North America. They witnessed the enormous clout that Federation carries with the White House, which has appointed Federation representatives to its team of advisors.
