Joplin Award Winner Profile: Guy McDouall, 2012

New Zealand screenwriter Guy McDouall's career has taken off since winning the Joplin Award this past March. He recently landed his first paid writing assignment and is currently a finalists in the New Zealand Writers Guild Unproduced Feature Film Script Category for his screenplay, A Random Act of Violence.

"The support of Gordy Hoffman and his team has proved very beneficial to my fledgling career as a writer. Since winning Bluecat's Joplin Award this year, I've had on-going personal communication with Gordy. Bluecat supported and helped promote a reading of my screenplay "Random Acts Of Violence" while Gordy was in New Zealand. I also attended Gordy's Wellington workshop. One of the people auditing this workshop was a local producer who also attended the reading. As a result of her being exposed to two of my screenplays, I landed my first paid writing assignment. To say I'm excited would be an understatement. The reading has also helped generate some interest in my script. This has resulted in established filmmakers requesting to read it. At the start of this year, I was completely off the radar as a screenwriter. Now, I'm on it and getting paid to write. BlueCat has a lot to do with that!"

Grand Prize Winner Profile: Ian Simpson, 2010

Our 2010 Grand Prize winner, Ian Simpson, was recently signed at Paradigm. He received a $10,000 check for winning BlueCat for his screenplay,
Below the Waist.

"Having chosen to sign with Paradigm  in 2012, a significant milestone on the 'road' that got me to this place is my experience with BlueCat in 2010. Regardless of the fact that I won the competition that year, my work with Gordy and the dedication of the BlueCat team have proven invaluable to me ever since. The is not just a competition, it is an array of resources designed to create better screenwriters. I am certainly humbled by BlueCat in this regard, as it undoubtedly has made me a better writer.
-Ian Simpson
