Here's hoping that your spring is off to a beautiful start, come rain, snow or sunshine! We are entering a special time of year when our communities are celebrating Passover and Easter, bringing family and friends together to share old traditions and create new ones. I understand that this is also National Humor Month. It's a nice reminder that we should always include laughter, smiles, and good energy around us. Life is too short to do otherwise.
Best wishes for a great April, Alex Valdez, President/CEO CHRISTUS St. Vincent |

Weight Loss Surgery Solutions
CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center recently became the first Center in New Mexico to offer 3 weight loss surgical solutions for patients who qualify. These include: Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery, Laparoscopic Gastric Banding (Lap Band), Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy. For patients choosing the Lap Band surgery, they no longer have to travel out of state to receive these highly specialized procedures.
This new program focuses on a team approach made up of dietitians, psychiatrists, exercise physiologists, gastroenterologists, pulmonary and sleep physicians in addition to the surgeon and program coordinator. Each member is dedicated to the team concept and is here to support patients through this lifestyle change.
Weight-loss surgery may be done to help you lose weight if you are very obese and have not been able to lose weight with diet and exercise. Remember, surgery alone is not the answer for weight loss. It can train you to eat less, but you still have to do much of the work. You must be committed to diet and exercise after the surgery. Talk to your doctor to learn if this is a good option for you.

Diabetes & Weight Loss Surgery
A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrates that patients with severe, out-of-control diabetes who received either gastric banding surgery or gastric bypass, had lower blood sugar -- long before they lost weight. Further, there were signs that the surgery itself - not just the wight loss - helps to reverse diabetes.

United Way of Santa Fe County -
First Born Program
Getting the right start can make a difference that lasts a lifetime. Research supports that the most rapid period of brain development occurs from birth to age 3 - when the foundation for long term success can be shaped. And, it begins well before you leave the hospital with your new bundle of joy!
To help first time families get the right start, the United Way of Santa Fe County, with support from CHRISTUS St. Vincent, manages the First Born ® Program. While at the hospital, all families for whom this is their first baby, are met by a hospital social worker who explains the First Born program and offers a post-partum home visit. These voluntary Home visits are designed to increase knowledge, skills and insights into the parenting process while guiding families through the child's first 3 years.
All services are free and offered to women pregnant for the first time and first time families within the program service areas. For more information, about the First Born ® Program, contact United Way of Santa Fe County at 660-7720.

50 Year Service Award
Last week, the hospital hosted a dinner to recognize employees with milestone years of service. One individual in particular stood out as she accepted her 50 Year Service Award, Juanita Jaramillo, a primary care unit secretary. Following is an excerpt from Juanita's very moving acceptance speech: "Often, I am asked how I could serve an organization for so many years. The answer is because I realized early on that the most important way we can serve our communities and citizens is by loving what we do in our everyday work. Whether it be serving as a nursing assistant, a secretary, doctor, or food service worker. This is where our loyalty and success in healthcare service comes from.... We share something, an interest, a passion for helping others."
