March 2012
The Pulse Header
I'm pleased to share our first monthly e-newsletter with you and members of the northern New Mexico community.

The Pulse is another effort to keep you apprised of the work of the hospital, to share general healthcare items that may be of interest, and to acknowledge the important work of other organizations that are also engaged in addressing the health and wellness of our community.

Please forward this email to friends, family and business associates and share your thoughts with me about this new effort to communicate with you. If you are not interested in receiving future communications (we hope this is not the case!), you are able to opt out below.

I hope this email finds you doing well and that your 2012 is off to a great start.

Best Regards,

New Era in Collaborative Cancer Care
Going through cancer diagnosis, treatment, and healing just got a little easier. A new partnership between the hospital and  New Mexico Cancer Care Associates will now enable "full service" cancer care in Northern New Mexico, regardless of a patient's ability to pay.

You Know This...Too Much Salt is Bad for You!
Healthy Living
9 in 10 of us get too much sodium every day. It comes in the form of salt added at the table and in the foods we buy everyday. Sodium raises blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. You know that you know this. Put that shaker down!

Food Depot Feeds Families

While it is not always the most obvious or visible issue, hunger remains constant in the lives of many New Mexicans. Multiple studies show that New Mexico consistently ranks in the top 20 states for hunger within the United States, with more than 40,000 people seeking food assistance each week. This means that vulnerable families, children and seniors do not have enough food in their homes. Missing Meals in New Mexico discovered that low-income New Mexicans are missing 117,140,870 meals annually.

For The Food Depot's service area of nine counties, nearly 16 million meals are missing. Annually, The Food Depot provides nearly five million meals through its 120 partner agencies in Northern New Mexico; however, this still does not fully meet the need. And while CHRISTUS St. Vincent remains a financial supporter of The Food Depot efforts, the changing nature of donations, an expanding service area and increased demand for food. They could use your help.

Homewise Partnership
In January, the hospital announced a contribution of $2.2M in new funding for it's partnership with Homewise. In this new round of funding, CHRISTUS Health and SVHsupport (formerly SVH SupportCo) are investing $100k each to be used for down payment assistance. In addition SVHsupport is providing $2M in mortgage assistance with the goal of helping over 100 CHRISTUS St. Vincent employees become local homeowners through the successful Homewise program.
