Welcome to Grace!
Our parish enjoyed a vibrant Pentecost last week. We were fortunate to welcome some newcomers and to enjoy a luscious repast of foods from many heritages after the service--including curry, biryani, Moroccan carrots, halupkis, taco pie, kiffles, baklava, blintzes, and more.
As part of our being Grace in the city, we want to extend our welcome to anyone seeking God or a deeper life with God. If someone you know fits that situation, consider forwarding this newsletter to her or him. Or, if you prefer, let the church office know and we'll do the forwarding.
See you Sunday. --Beth Reed, Priest-in-charge |
Sunday, June 3, at Grace | | Eucharist, Refreshments
We celebrate the Eucharist at 10 AM. The scriptures are rich, with the call of Isaiah the prophet as the first reading, encouraging words from Paul's Letter to the Romans as the second reading ("We did not receive a spirit of fear," and Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus about undergoing a second birth as the gospel passage. For the full texts of the readings, click on Sunday Scripture texts in the Quick Links box above. Reading the Sunday texts beforehand is a good way to prepare to hear them proclaimed in our weekly assembly.
The Sunday after Pentecost is called Trinity Sunday, a feast that entered the church's calendar in the 1300s.
After the service, we'll gather for refreshments and conversation, and then the vestry will convene for a meeting.
The Forum takes a break for the summer.

Photos of Grace next Sunday | | Local photographer makes us smile
On June 10, Hub Willson will take pictures at Grace during our Sunday Eucharist. It would be great to see the church as full as we can make it in these pictures, so please plan to be here that day if at all possible!
The photos will be used on our website (which in the process of being reworked) and other print and electronic materials. The photos at the top of this page and at right are examples of Mr. Willson's beautiful work.

GMS Scholarship Fund | | We received two grants this week
As part of her work as Executive Director of Grace Montessori School, Libby House writes and submits grant requests to numerous organizations. This week, we received word that two foundations will give the scholarship funding she requested.
We are grateful to The Rider-Pool Foundation for their grant of $2,000, and to The Frank E. and Seba B. Payne Foundation for their grant of $5,000. |
Downtown Development | | There's a hole in the middle of the city
A few blocks from the church and across the street from the main campus of our school, there's a huge hole in the ground. It's the beginning of a new arena and hotel and office buildings. What happens next? Delay in the process seems to be a possibility.
I (Beth Reed) encourage you to stay current on this issue and bring your thoughts and questions to any parish gathering. This is our neighborhood, and Grace Church and our ministries and our neighbors will surely be affected by whatever happens nearby.

Summer Reading Group | | It's gearing up
A group of parishioners has been gathering for several years now on summer Sunday nights to read and converse about a book or two, as well as to enjoy refreshments and each other's company. The group gathers in homes.
The first book this summer is Tavis Smiley and Cornel West's The Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto, and the the group will begin on June 17. For more information, contact Mary Louise Bross or Bob House. |
United Thank Offering | | We'll do this on June 17
Here is a description from the national Church's website: "United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of the Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity."
Grace Church received a grant from this ministry several years ago of around $35,000, which was used to renovate the downstairs bathrooms and the church offices. In other words, we have benefited substantially from UTO, and if we can support this effort, we should, so others can benefit as we have. Special envelopes for donations to this ministry will be available. |
