Welcome to the weekly e-newsletter of Grace Episcopal Church. Read about what's happening at Grace, and use the quick links to the left to find other helps to our life with God.

Our Palm Sunday gathering begins at 10:00 on the sidewalk on Fifth Street. We will bless the palm branches and process into the church. At the end of the service, we will also leave the church in procession. This is our last liturgical celebration before our immersion in Jesus' life, death, and resurrection that is the Easter Triduum (April 5-8).

To share Grace's news with a friend, click the "forward email" link at the bottom of the page. This could be a simple way to invite friends or acquaintances to the richness of our liturgical and communal life and work.

See you Sunday!

Sunday, April 1, at Grace
Eucharist with Palm Processionpalm sunday

We celebrate the Eucharist at 10:00. Our Tradition presents us with challenging texts: one from Isaiah, a hymn of praise to Christ from one of St. Paul's letters, and the Passion (story of Jesus' arrest, trial, crucifixion and how the people around him acted in those situations). For the full texts, click on "Sunday Scripture texts" in the Quick Links box.

We gather on Fifth Street to begin.
Spring Cleaning at Church

Please help this Saturday

A group will gather this Saturday at 9:00 especial
ly to work on the floor of the worship space. It's not glamorous or exciting, but maintaining a clean space is part of our common life and part of the hospitality we offer visitors. If you are able to contribute even an hour, please do so. David Moyer, our junior warden, is organizing this effort. If you are able to give him advance notice of your participation, that would be helpful. Send him an email here.

Last Saturday several people helped with spring cleaning
(that's Joe Cousart working on a stairwell wall above), including Hillie Cousart, Chris Daniels, Gunnar Denton-Borhaug, Libby House, Monica Lewellis, Beth Reed, George Retseck, Joan Roy, and Kathy Young. David Moyer had this crew well organized, and we finished before noon. Libby House made sure the group had enough caffeine and calories by bringing coffee and doughnuts and muffins.

You know Grace has no paid custodial staff: we take care of our building and grounds ourselves. Parishioners attend to weekly cleaning tasks. Kelly Cannon and Jeff Reed do some vacuuming, and the Brosses clean the bathrooms, for example. The Altar Guild takes care of linens and vessels for our services. Ray Harbort and Ellen Roberts tend the gardens. Ray has begun some spring work, weeding and planting in the Fifth Street beds and the planter outside the front door. This brightens our corner and our neighborhood.

Witnesses for peace and justice
Grace at John Lewis11 Grace members heard John Lewis;
Roy Bourgeois speaks tonight

John Lewis, a Representative from Georgia and former civil rights leader, spoke last night at Moravian College. Lewis encouraged the crowd to find ways to "get in the way, get in trouble, good trouble, and never give up." Eleven Grace members were inspired, including those in the photo.

Parishioner Dr. Kelly Denton-Borhaug helped plan the event and she wrote about Lewis in Wednesday's Morning Call. Read about Lewis and Kelly's work at Moravian College here.

Tonight, March 30, long-time peace activist Fr. Roy Bourgeois will speak about "The School of the Americas and U.S. Foreign Policy in Latin America." Tapas and live music start at 5:00 pm, and the presentation is 6:00-7:15 pm. The event is free and open to the public, and attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable food donation for New Bethany Ministries.

The event will be held in Dyer Auditorium in the Walter Building on Moravian Academy's Upper School campus, 4313 Green Pond Road in Bethlehem.
Development in Downtown Allentown
cuna logo Change is coming

The Morning Call has been reporting on the Neighborhood Improvement Zone and the development planned just blocks from our church and across the street from our school. Demolition has been proceeding and plans are to open the hockey arena in the fall of 2013.

On February 26, about 15 participants in our Adult Forum heard a presentation from Joshua Chisholm of Congregations United for Neighborhood Action (CUNA). He presented maps and statistics on poverty and unemployment, showing how concentrated they are in downtown Allentown. We wondered: Will the proposed developments help our neighbors who do not have jobs and who are poor? Will they be forced to move? And what could such change mean for our church and school?

CUNA is convening neighborhood meetings at some local churches to share its information and help communities think though possibilities. For more information, click here.
Grace Community Foundation
food pantry line The "plus" in "food pantry plus"

We refer to our pantry as a "food pantry plus." That's because it's a venue for much more than emergency food; it's a place Grace connects with our neighbors. Here's an example: On the last two Saturdays, a volunteer was present so people could register to vote.

Grace in the Theatre
shakespeare Go see two Fegleys and a Reed

You can see Michael Fegley in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), "a three-actor romp through the Bard's plays full of parody, improvisation, and farce." The Allentown Public Theatre show runs Thursdays through Saturdays, until April 7 in the Long Haul Room of the America on Wheels museum. (Michael is very sad to miss participating in the Triduum this year. Grace will miss his voice during the Genesis reading at the Vigil.) For tickets, click here.

August Fegley and Julia Reed will appear in Alice in Wonderland at Allentown's Civic Theatre April 12-14. August is the White Rabbit, and Julia is Rose. The box office phone is 610-432-8943.
