Saturday, November 12, at Grace (and Sunday, November 13)

Eucharist, visitors, conversation, festive reception

We celebrate the Eucharist at 4:15 on Saturday afternoon with our student visitors. After the service, we'll be seated in the worship space and continue our time together. It will be a kind of question-and-answer period; they may ask us about our liturgy, our building, our music, our seating arrangement, our common life, our mission, and other things. We have the chance to say in our own words, and with a diversity of voices, how we experience our life with God here and how Grace came to be the way it is.

After the conversation, we'll move to the gathering space for a festive reception.

We are nearing the end of the current liturgical year and moving toward a new one; the scriptures highlight stories and themes related to judgment and the end of time. For example, this Sunday we hear from the apostle Paul: "The day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.  . . . But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief, for you are all children of light." Such images lead us naturally into early Advent. For the full readings, click on "Sunday Scripture texts" (above left).

There will also be a Eucharist on Sunday at the usual time, 10:00.
Our Stewardship Commitments
November 20 is our stewardship ingathering and luncheon

You recall that we postponed our stewardship ingathering and luncheon until next Sunday, November 20. Some folks have already sent in their pledge forms ahead of schedule.

If you have not yet decided on a pledge to the church, please consider all the ways our church is A Place of Grace of you in the city: our worship, our common life, our mission. Please consider how you can support the life and work here with money, time, and talent, and fill out the pledge form on the back of the stewardship brochure.

Extra copies of the brochure and related documents are on the windowsill at the back of the church.

Bring the completed brochure to church on Sunday, November 20, and put it in the offering plate when it comes to you. We'll celebrate a successful campaign after church that day with a luncheon.
Church and School Events
Save these dates

Sunday, November 20, is the stewardship ingathering and luncheon.

Advent begins November 27. At the planning meeting last Sunday, participants made choices about music and texts, and we previewed the schedule for Christmas preparations. The Greening (decorating the worship space for Christmas) will take place after the Eucharist on Sunday, December 18. Everybody is welcome, as this process takes many hands, and there are tasks for children and adults. On Saturday morning, December 17, volunteers are needed to prepare greens and other items. Stay tuned for more information.
Play-reading Group
We'll read a farce in January
 books
For six years or so, about a dozen parishioners have gathered in the summer to read a book or two, and in the fall and winter, to read a few plays. Anybody is welcome, and newcomers, this is a very fun way to get to know some members of Grace. We simply read the the play together, taking various parts. Last winter one of the plays we read was a farce by Sam Shephard, and it was hard not to roll on the floor laughing. Our next play will be a farce as well.

Our next get-together will be on Sunday evening, January 15, at the Reeds' house. Our format is for the host to provide drinks, and everyone else to bring snacks. Please contact Mary Louise Bross if you would like to participate (to ensure there are enough copies of the play available).
Heritage Day at Grace Montessori
The colors were beautiful

Last Saturday, children and families at our school celebrated their variety of ethnic backgrounds, with foods, displays, and crafts. A highlight of this annual celebration is a "fashion show," in which parents and teachers and children model the clothes of their heritage. This year was no exception!
Grace Community Foundation
963 neighbors used our pantry in October

Last month, Patty McNamara and the volunteers of our food pantry served 306 families. That number represents 524 adults, 397 children, and 42 senior citizens who receive "senior boxes." The food pantry operates out of Hadesty Hall on the lower level of Grace Church.

How is it that nearly 1,000 people every month, in the immediate vicinity of our church, need help getting food on their tables? The Second Harvest website has information on hunger, food insecurity, and poverty in Lehigh County.

Second Harvest is a national network of food banks. Ms. McNamara places a weekly order with our local branch and receives a delivery at the pantry on Thursday mornings.
