Drivers in Mexico look to reduce maximum weight allowed.
Independent truckers in Mexico are calling for clearer, better rules on vehicle weights and dimensions. The drivers, who have launched national protests, say they want to remove the permits that let double-trailer vehicles carrying loads as heavy as 100 metric tons drive on two-lane roads.
In fact, the protests started after a deadly accident occurred, in which the rear units of a double trailer came unfastened and crashed into passenger buses, killing a total of 49 people.
Truckers say the fact that some double-trailers are allowed on back roads with these permits leads other drivers who don't qualify for permits to do the same. If caught without a permit, they simply pay bribes to corrupt police officials.
According to the transportation and communication ministry (SCT), in 2011, 5,710 trucks received fines for being overweight. In an interview with local media, SCT trucking director Miguel Elizalde said about half the 30,000 accidents recorded each year on Mexico's federal highways involved trucks, and roughly 900 of those were double trailers.
The U.S. federal commercial vehicle maximum weight standard on the Interstate Highway System is 80,000 pounds or 40 tons, reports AP. Mexico allows twice that much, and even that limit is often exceeded.

Nissan celebrated the opening of its new manufacturing complex in Aguascalientes. This is the third manufacturing complex in the country and the second in the state of Aguascalientes. The complex is the result of a $2 billion investment announced last January to
increase manufacturing capacity needed to satisfy the high demand for Nissan vehicles in the domestic and international markets. The new complex will be located to the south of Aguascalientes, near the airport, and will be 2.5-times larger than the existing plant. During its Phase 1, it will produce 175,000 compact vehicles per year. To achieve this goal, Nissan will create 3,000 direct jobs and generate approximately 9,000 indirect jobs. Furthermore, the complex will include a supplier park and a quality proving ground. Carlos Lozano, governor of Aguascalientes, stated: "This first stone represents our commitment to work and collaborate with Nissan to ensure that this project, that Aguascalientes is sharing with Mexico and the world, drives growth and generates benefits for all productive sectors and thousands of families in our country." Mexico's auto industry on the rise
Mexico's auto production in June rose 14% compared to that of June 2011, to a record 268,388 vehicles, as exports to the U.S. and South America continued to soar, according to the Mexican Automobile Industry Association, or Amia. Auto exports jumped 22% in June 2012 versus June 2011 to 229,089 cars and light trucks.
According to Mr. Eduardo Solis, head of AMIA, the U.S. market continues to show strength despite concerns about economic slowing north of the border. In June, Mexico auto exports to the U.S. rose 23% versus June of last year to about 150,000 vehicles. In the first six months of the year, Mexico car exports to the U.S. were about 741,000 vehicles, an accumulated increase of 11% compared to the same period a year ago.
Mr. Solis said auto output should be around 2.7 million to 2.8 million vehicles this year versus 2.6 million last year. Whether Mexico could break the 3-million mark likely will depend on American car buyers.
