> Our Tahrir Square: Will You Be There?
In less than a week, we'll gather. On Thursday, October 6, the 10th anniversary of this country's occupation of Afghanistan, we, the American people, will begin an occupation of our capital to say "Enough!"
Enough killing. Enough "defense contracting." Enough selling out of public interests by corporate-owned politicians. Enough of The Machine! Create a New World!
Next Thursday, the October2011 action begins. That day, and for as long thereafter as necessary, Americans will stand in solidarity in Freedom Plaza, in the heart of Washington DC, to voice demands that a large majority of Americans consistently support:
- Tax the rich and corporations
- End the wars, bring the troops home, cut military spending
- Protect the social safety net, strengthen Social Security and provide Medicare for all
- End corporate welfare for oil companies and other big business interests
- Transition to a clean energy economy, reverse environmental degradation
- Protect worker rights including collective bargaining; create jobs and raise wages
- Get money out of politics
Join us in Washington and add your voice!
When You Go
Organizers Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers remind you:
1) Plan ahead. Services will be basic: portajohns, a medical tent and limited food. Bring lawn chairs, umbrellas, blankets, food, water, sunscreen or a hat, a tarp or other temporary shelter. (Tents may or may not be petmitted, depending on whether the community decides to challenge a law forbidding them in DC public parks, and whether any such challenge is successful.) Visit October2011.org for full details.
2) Be respectful to everyone. This is about peace, justice, jobs for all, protecting and expanding the social safety net, and protecting the planet. Peace begins with each of us.
3) The police will be doing their jobs. We are representing their interests as much as our own. They are working despite cuts in benefits "necessitated" by the same bogus "austerity measures" the elites are trying to force on the rest of us. Let them know: When we succeed, they succeed!
4) Participate! We are establishing an occupation - a long-term presence meant to effect positive change. In addition to supporting speakers and initiatives of the occupation community, encourage friends to come to DC, to participate online, and to spread the word to THEIR friends.
5) People familiar with the Washington DC area are needed to provide transport to Freedom Plaza throughout the occupation! If you can help, email Lenny Bianchi: Lenny20135@me.com
