News from The Episcopal Church of St. Paul      Contents        September 2012

Dear Friends,

It always seems that summer will never

arrive, and then once it is here it flies

by much too quickly. I am writing this

letter as preparations to go back to

school are buzzing all over DeKalb and

 the NIU campus.

rev

While I'm sad to see summer go, I'm also glad to embrace everything that fall will bring. One thing that fall always brings is more of you to Sunday worship on a more regular basis. In September we start to awake from our summer siesta as a congregation and engage in a time of more intentional worship, fellowship, and spiritual formation as the Body of Christ. I think this "unofficial" season of the Church year is one of my favorites!

This fall I am particularly pleased that so many more of you are joining with me in the ministries at the heart of our life together at St. Paul's.   I will be joining our faithful team of children's Sunday School teachers in our lower level this fall to teach the Jr. and Sr. High Sunday School.  Brad Cripe, Marilyn Cleland, and Gretchen Schlabach are working together on our newly formed Adult Christian Education team to lead Sunday School for Adults.

They have an exciting curriculum planned including a mix of Bible Study, Study of World Religions, and Mission. I have also been working with a team of parishioners to bring creative elements to our liturgies together particularly around significant feast days in the Church. (Check back in the October newsletter for information about new elements to our worship on All Saints Sunday November 4th.)

I'm also looking forward to the return of our choirs and musicians as well as the continued leadership of the other ministers at the Eucharist (acolytes, Eucharistic ministers, Lectors, Intercessors, Ushers, Flower Guild, Altar Guild, and hospitality hosts, to name a few!). Perhaps we will even have a few of our youngest members join the acolyte ministry this year. Many of our little ones suddenly seem quite grown up! (Just let me know if your child wants to give being an acolyte a try.)

Fall is also among our busiest times of years for receiving guests at St. Paul's on Sunday mornings. Even if you are not an official usher/greeter for the day, I know you will join me in welcoming our guests as if we were welcoming our Lord Jesus Christ himself. Every time God has asked us to welcome those who he draws to this holy sanctuary I have witnessed you putting forth a heart of hospitality and crossing borders of difference to honor our guests. Keep up the good work of spreading the good news of God's love through your gifts of hospitality on Sundays this fall and in the rest of the week in the rest of your lives.

The Peace of Christ be with you,

Rev. Stacy+

From the Senior Warden, Michael Duffy

Every August since I have been working at Northern Illinois University, the bug of autumnal anticipation has bitten me. Though the air has not begun to chill yet and the leaves have not begun to turn, I know this is just around the corner. Students will begin to arrive on campus, and the streets of DeKalb will suddenly be much more congested. Young people will begin another year of studies in preparation for their adult lives. One can see evidence of the thrills of youth by observing the crowds of these young people gathering at social events at local coffee houses, bars, and of course, at sporting events. The future for these young people is exciting, but it is also uncertain, as it is for the rest of us. This fall will bring some exciting and potentially challenging times for us at St. Paul's, as well as for our neighbors and friends outside our parish. Three phenomena strike me in particular about this fall. First, our children will begin a new year in school and in our Godly Play Christian education program. Second, our vestry and parish will discuss offering blessings of same sex unions at St. Paul's, in response to Bishop Lee's authorization of a same-sex blessing rite and the concurrent authorization by the General Convention for such a rite. Third, our nation is facing a major election season.

The school year will be full of the fun and exciting events that a new year brings, as well as the inevitable challenging and difficult times.   The children of our parish receive enthusiastic support from our congregation and from our rector, and this encourages me. Our parish came together to renovate our basement last year, and it continues to look great! Our Godly Play Christian education program for children is a wonderful resource made possible by the dedication of a good number of parishioners who give of their time and talent for the goal of facilitating our children's formation into mature Christians. Outside of St. Paul's, our children - along with our neighbor children in the DeKalb area - will begin a new school year, with all its inherent adventures and trepidations. Life is not always rosy for children, as they are some of the most vulnerable participants in society. Our "Keeping God's People Safe" logos on our doors are an encouraging sign to our children and youth to signify that St. Paul's Church is a safe place for everyone. I encourage all of us to keep our eyes and ears open, to support our children, and to advocate for the safety of all children, inside and outside our parish.

It probably goes without saying that the blessing of same sex unions has been, along with the ordination of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons to the diaconate, priesthood, and episcopate, one of the most divisive courses of action in the recent history of the Episcopal Church. This action has now reached us at St. Paul's Church, as we begin our discussion of the blessing of same sex unions (a congregational meeting on this subject will be at 9AM Sunday, September 23rd). I am humbled by the opportunity to join in the dialogue around such a momentous topic. The fact that we are having this discussion demonstrates that we care very deeply about our sisters and brothers who love someone of the same sex. However, this is uncharted territory for us at St. Paul's, and the outcome of our discussion is uncertain. Rev. Stacy counseled us in her sermon on August 5 to "to tell the truth to one another in all manners of speaking, but do not forget to love one another just the same." It is likely that our discussions will bring differences in opinions and beliefs to the fore. I take comfort in the words of Jesus, who reminds us in his Sermon on the Mount to be reconciled when we have differences: "So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift" (Matthew 5:23-24 NRSV). In all my time as a member of St. Paul's, I have been impressed by the thoughtfulness of our parishioners, and I am confident that we will continue to be thoughtful as we discuss same sex blessings.

Our upcoming election season is imminent. In addition to our usual round of state and local matters to decide this November, we will also be electing the President of the United States. The Republican National Convention will take place between August 27 and August 30, and the Democratic National Convention will follow it shortly between September 4 and September 6. After that, we will be bombarded with two months of political advertisements that seek to discredit one or the other of our presidential candidates, or candidates in other races, in various broadcast and Internet media. Often these advertisements do not address the problems that our politicians seek to solve, but rather they seek to hurt the candidates, who are human beings. By extension, those of us who identify as supporters of one or the other of these candidates are bound to be hurt as well. It is a great privilege to have a voice in our government, but it is a privilege that is difficult to exercise unscathed. I hope you will join me in a prayer for those who run for office, and for those who vote.

In conclusion, I leave you with the words of our Blessed Patron in his letter to the Ephesians. These words give me comfort and encouragement in divided times. "Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God" (Ephesians 4:31-5:2 NRSV).

Yours in Christian fellowship,

Michael Duffy

Treasurer's Summary, Pat Brown

For the Period Ending July 31, 2012

Receipts: By July 31st we had received $112,587, which is 64% of pledges and 55% of the total budgeted receipts for the seven month period. This included a transfer of $30,000 from the Endowment fund which is 40% of the total of $74,397 budgeted for the year. This is the first time this year we have withdrawn funds from the Endowment Fund. Our policy for the last two years is to take out what is needed as the year progresses.

Disbursements: Total Operating Expenditures for the first seven months were $118,277, 58% of the budgeted total. The difference of expenditures over receipts is $5,690.

During this time period we have collected $2,305 of the $10,000 budgeted for the Capital/Building Fund. (This is a gentle reminder to remit Building Fund pledge amounts if they are outstanding.)

Building Fund expenditures have been $4,800 paid to Flores Construction for rebuilding the retaining wall by the front entrance to the church.

Water Damage Repairs: We received $25,000 for the ice dam water damage repairs (this damage occurred in December 2010) from Church Insurance. This summer, Flores Construction repaired and repainted the church ceiling and walls. J and J Decorating is in the proces of refinishing the damaged pews. Total spent to date is $7,500. The insurance will also cover the cost of refinishing the remaining pews - for a uniform appearance, which will be done in September. We will then remit the leftover insurance funds back to the company.

The value of the Endowment Fund at the end of July was $1,824,258.

Since American Midwest Bank is doing our bookkeeping we have decided to move the operating account from Castle Bank to the American Midwest Bank at the end of August. This will allow us to pay bills and keep track of transactions more efficiently. The Castle Bank account will remain open until all transactions have cleared.

We are forming a committee to complete a financial review of the books for the years 2010 and 2011. If you have any concerns or questions about any of our finances please don't hesitate to contact me. My phone number is 815-758-0906, and email is plbcpa1@gmail.com.

Respectfully submitted,

Pat Brown, Treasurer

Child/Youth Christian Education

I Wonder...does God have bones?

This is just one of the awesome questions that are being asked by the children in our Godly Play program, a curriculum designed to invite children to learn our sacred stories and Christian practices on their own terms, in their own time, using their own imaginations.

Please consider being a "witness to the wondering" by serving as a Door Person on Sunday mornings. The door person arrives at 9:15 to prepare snacks for the children, then welcomes the children into the classroom when they are ready. They also assist the children in getting out their work after the story and help pass out the snack during the "feast".

Three to five volunteers are needed to provide support for the teachers and coverage during vacations. There is no teaching or preparation required! If you are able to give one Sunday per month, we need you!!! Contact Maureen Gerrity, Julie Stubblefield, Jayne Crosby or Rochelle Cripe  for more information. The kickoff for Godly Play is Sunday, September 9th.

The host usually provides the main course and the rest of the group contributes a salad, a side dish, a dessert or what ever they wish. These are low key informal gatherings which never fail to be a good night out!

Now is the time - new groups are forming. The sign-up sheet is on the Parish Hall table. You will see two lists- one for those who prefer to dine out each time and another for those who prefer to meet in individual homes, but note- hosting is optional! We'd like to get the groups up and running by October so please sign up by mid-September. Please see Ellen or Freyja if you have questions.

Episcopal Church Women Fall Forum

The Episcopal Church Women Fall Forum on Saturday, September 15, is on Art in Spirituality, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1125 Franklin Street, Downers Grove.  The details are found here  and are explained in the Registration Form, which is available in the Parish Hall.

Registrations must be received by September 7. Please contact Eva Leonard if you have any questions.

The Diocesan ECW has arranged its topics of outreach and spiritual growth in several categories, of which ART is the first.  It is hoped that every ECW member will find one of these areas to be one in which she and/or her parish will wish to work.

This new organization will be explained and discussed at St. Paul's September ECW Luncheon.
Episcopal Church Women September Luncheon
Saturday, September 22

Women of St. Paul's!

Our Fall Opener meeting will be held on Saturday, September 22nd, at noon in the Parish Hall. Our conversation will center on the function of the ECW here in our parish. Our meeting will begin an effort to establish an agenda for this semester. Inspired by the charge given to us by the diocesen head of ECW, we are challenged to rethink our identities as church women and our function as an organization of Episcopal women in our community.

How can the ECW serve all the women of our church?   Can we serve working women, young mothers, women struggling with the trials of middle age, or the challenges of old age?

In other words, can St. Paul's ECW serve as a forum for discussion of the spiritual challenges of each age of our lives? And, of course, how may we continue our serve our communities?

This is not your grandmother's (or even your mother's) ECW. And they have served their communities well. But we are challenged to find out who we are now.

Please come and help to start this conversation. A salad and a dessert, with refreshments, will be provided; bring your own sandwich if you'd like. REMEMBER: Saturday, September 22, at 12 noon until 2:00pm.

Please rsvp to let us know how much salad and dessert to provide. -- Marilyn Cleland ritamackall@comcast.net -- coordinator of the September meeting.

Lobster Boil Report from the Episcopal Church Women

newlobsterboiltshirt Great news and thanks to all your efforts we are thrilled to report the Lobster Boil profits are $10, 676. Hooray!!

Fifty percent of our profits go to 10 local charities and this money will be distributed in April at a reception in the Parish Hall. The remainder is spent on St. Paul's Parish activities including 15% given to the Rector's Discretionary Fund and 20% given to the Vestry for general Parish support. The ECW will be purchasing 10 mosquito nets for NetsforLife. We are also sending individuals to the ECW Convention. Questions? See Ellen, Pat Brown or Rosemarie Ostberg.

United Thank Offering (UTO) Reminder

"United Thank Offering is a ministry of the Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving
daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. Those who participat in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity. United Thank Offering is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings and to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout the Episcopal Church and in invited Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world." (Adapted from the UTO website)

This is a wonderful practice to adopt, making a small donation each day in thanks for the blessings in your life and bringing your daily donations to the annual UTO Ingathering held in the Spring of 2013. UTO boxes are available on the table in the Parish Hall.

Eva Leonard reports that we received a letter thanking us for our UTO contribution. In the future, there will be one UTO Ingathering, held in April, which will be collected before the ECW Annual Meeting. See Eva Leonard if you have any questions.

Congregational Meeting Regarding the Solemnization of Holy Union
Sunday, September 23

On June 1, 2011 the Diocese of Chicago provided guidelines to its congregations for the Blessing of Same Sex Civil Unions. Congregations were asked at that point to discuss this sacramental rite and decide whether or not we would like to offer this rite. The Vestry of St. Paul's discussed these guidelines at our August 19th, 2012 meeting.

The Vestry and Rector of St. Paul's invite you to a larger discussion as to the question whether or not we will offer the rite of the Solemnization of Holy Union at St. Paul's. This meeting will take place on Sunday, September 23rd, 2012 between the 8AM and 1030AM celebrations of the Holy Eucharist. The Vestry will then make a decision based on input from the congregation at a follow up meeting in October (date tbd). The Wardens, members of the Vestry, and Rev. Stacy are available to listen to your thoughts and questions prior to and after the September 23rd meeting.

Printed guidelines from the Diocese of Chicago that are guiding our discussion at St. Paul's are available here and in printed form in the Narthex and Parish Hall.

Congratulations to Team St. Paul's for running/walking the DeKalb Corn Classic 3K and 10K! Team St. Paul's, which includes Reverend Stacy, Rich Frontjes, Oscar Frontjes, Rowan Frontjes, Ellen Anderson, Sue Ouellette, Jamie Stubblefield, Julie Stubblefield, Luke Stubblefield, Mike Duffy, Kristin Duffy and Nora Duffy raised about $1200 which is equivalent to 100 nets, in support of  Episcopal Relief and Development's campaign to distribute mosquito nets that help fight malaria with Team NetsforLifeŽ.

Important Message from St. Paul's Flower Guild

The Flower Guild would like to share their love of flowers with our home-bound members and others who would appreciate fresh flowers.  If you would like to take the flowers you may do so after the 1030AM service.  However, please use the designated vases in the closet by the kitchen.  Do not take the altar vases.  We now have many unmatched vases that are not suitable for use on the altar.

Please return the designated vases after you are done with them.  And if you currently have any St. Paul's vases at home please return them to the kitchen.  The Flower Guild hopes that people will take the flowers home and enjoy them as much as we enjoy arranging them for the glory of God.  Please contact any of the flower guild members if you have any questions, and we will be happy to assist you.  God's peace.  Kristin Duffy, Mary Lincoln, Hazel Rutherford, Jane Nenonen and Janie Torma
