News from The Episcopal Church of St. Paul May 2012 |
|
|
Dear Friends,
This month we will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension (May 17), the 43rd Annual Lobster Boil (May 19), the end of another Sunday School year (May 20), and Pentecost Sunday (May 27). Pentecost Sunday this year will also be "Plant the Garden Sunday" to plant and bless our second year with the St. Paul's Neighborhood Garden. As the other major events this month suggest, we are sowing a lot more than just seeds in our veggie Garden-we are sowing the seeds of God's love in our community and in our hearts.
The Episcopal Church Women of St. Paul's have been faithful in distributing the funds raised by the Lobster Boil to a variety of non-profit organizations in DeKalb that serve people in need in a variety of ways. This year's annual reception for the recipients of funds not only were seeds joyfully spread by the ECW, those seeds began to take root. Representatives of the various agencies had a chance to network with one another and learn about resources and people available to help them live into their work more fully.

I was blessed by the opportunity to thank these individuals for the hard work they do, and we received many grateful smiles in return. I was reminded that we often do not take the time to tend to the gardens in which we are planted and openly appreciate the plants around us for the growth they strive for every day.
The Feast of the Ascension and The Feast of Pentecost come toward the end of the great season of Eastertide. At the ascension the resurrected Christ is taken up into heaven in the presence of his disciples. Jesus left with a promise to send the Holy Comforter-the Holy Spirit-to inspire his followers and lead them in the proclamation of the Gospel until his return. On the day of Pentecost (ten days later) the Holy Spirit was planted firmly in their hearts, and the disciples became apostles. Disciples are students, but apostles are ones who are sent to share the good news of new life in Jesus Christ. This year we will send forth our Sunday School students in the midst of these two events to their summer break. Listen carefully, because our children have been given seeds to sow as well by the Holy Spirit. Even gnarly old trees put forth new roots and shoots when the good news of spring arrives.
At the end of all this celebration we will plant some actual seeds and plants in our garden after our 10:30AM Pentecost Sunday service. All summer we will watch these plants grow into food that we will eat and share with our neighbors in part through the Salvation Army food pantry. Sowing the seeds of God's love-that's what we do at St. Paul's. I look forward to working in all these gardens with you, my beloved brothers and sisters in Christ.
Peace,
Rev. Stacy+ |

Feast of the Ascension
Thursday, May 17th
Luke tells us that forty days after the resurrection, in the presence of
His disciples, Jesus ascended into heaven to be seated at the right
hand of the Father (Luke 24:44-53, Acts 1:1-11). We affirm the
ascension in the Nicene Creed and at the Eucharist. This year we will
also celebrate with prayer, song, and communion at the Ascension of
our Lord Jesus on Thursday, May 17th, the 40th day after Easter Sunday.
We will have a celebration of the Holy Eucharist at 6PM with a potluck
to follow. Child care will be available.
Please sign up to bring a dish on the sign-up sheet in the Parish Hall. |

Lobster Boil Proceeds Support Local Charities
Since 1967 St. Paul's Episcopal Church has held the Lobster Boil, an annual fundraising event that supports both the church and the surrounding community. As a part of our tradition, half of the proceeds of the Lobster Boil are donated to local social service organizations.
In 2011, ten local social service organizations were awarded nearly $500 each, including: 4-C, DeKalb County American Red Cross, Safe Passage, Hope Haven, Voluntary Action Center (VAC), Family Service Agency, DeKalb County Hospice, Habitat for Humanity, DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center Auxiliary and Love In the Name of Christ.
These organizations address the diverse issues our community faces (i.e. homelessness, poverty, abuse, crisis) with thoughtfulness and compassion, and we as a church are proud to support them.

On Friday April 20th, the ECW distributed check to the local charities. In the back row from the left: Rev. Stacy Frontjes-Walker, Henry Leonard, Marilyn Sjoholm, Karen Hagen- Dekalb County Hospice, Leah Jordal- VAC, David Miller- Family Service Agency, and Ellen Anderson. In the front row from the left: Eva Leonard, Esther Pickett- 4-C, Leslie Wicks-Hope Haven, Emily Lefer- Safe Passage, Emily Barrile-American Red Cross, and Pat Brown. |
St. Paul's had a record Food Pantry Sunday in April!
A total of 281 items plus $50 in cash was delivered to the Salvation Army Food Pantry on Wednesday, April 11. Thanks to all parishioners who helped make April our best monthly donation yet! The total number of items donated by St. Paul's so far in 2012 is 658.
Don't forget! Our May Food Pantry Sunday will be May 13th. |
  United Thank Offering
We received 9 contributions to the United Thank Offering. This is an increase from the 7 contributions of recent years.
The UTO is not a part of the Episcopal Women's Church (ECW). The ECW is the helper. The UTO is an outgrowth of the "Ladies Foreign and Domestic Mission Society." The National UTO makes grants for proposals all over the globe. The list of grants is published each year in a pamphlet, which is available in our church (blue cover). The money placed in your box or envelope is a daily expression of Thanksgiving in your life.
Our gifts of Thanksgiving are a cause of Thanksgiving for those who receive the grants--
a circle of Thanks and Praise. |
Good Friday Service at Old St. Paul's Church

The people of St. George's Greek Orthodox Church in DeKalb invited the people of St. Paul's to their Good Friday service April 13th. St. Paul's was originally at their present location on 2nd street, near the former DeKalb Clinic. They took possession of our former building in 1966. Henry, Eva, Rosemarie, Mary L., Bill and I attended their Good Friday service. They were so welcoming and kind. It was a lovely service full of Bible readings, reenactments and incense. I learned last month that incense helps brings prayers up to heaven.
Visiting other churches is such a gift and only adds to my appreciation of my own church in so many new and good ways.
