News from The Episcopal Church of St. Paul April 2012 |
|
Dear Friends in Christ,
I hope you will join us as we celebrate Holy Week this year. We are adding some new elements of storytelling and experiential liturgies that while rooted deeply in our Anglican tradition encourage us to get out of our seats and deepen our connection with Jesus.

We will still have our traditional Triduum liturgies
of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Great Vigil of Easter all at 6 PM.
Maundy Thursday will look the most different this year as our worship will include an actual meal of delicious Mediterranean cuisine from a local restaurant. We will celebrate Holy Communion together very much in the fashion of the first Last Supper. And then end our evening with a reading of arrest of Jesus as we enter a time of vigil in the sanctuary lasting until midnight.
Our children will take an active role in participating in our Maundy Thursday, Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday services in particular.

On Good Friday the nursery will be open during our evening service which may be more solemn than our youngest most active members can stand! And on Easter Vigil we will welcome a new adult member to the body of Christ through the sacrament of Holy Baptism.
Think of these fresh expressions of liturgy, baptism, and welcoming children much more intentionally as Anglicanism Remixed. That is the title of the diocesan wide workshop St. Paul's will be hosting on May 5th, 2012 with The Rev. Stephanie Spellers, author of Radical Welcome, as our workshop leader. The Episcopal Church (Anglican Church in the United States) has so much to offer in our beautiful traditions of worship and hospitality reflected most poignantly in Holy Week and most joyfully in Eastertide. Join us for Holy Week this year, and join us for Anglicanism Remixed on May 5th. Be a part of making the connection with God and our community as the people of St. Paul's.
The Peace of Christ be with you,
Rev. Stacy+ |

Holy Week and Easter Services at St. Paul's, April 1-8
Palm Sunday, April 1 Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday liturgies at both the 8:00 A.M. and 10:30 A.M. services.
We will begin with the blessing of the palms in the parish hall and
proceed outdoors (weather permitting) into the sanctuary. The passion
narrative read as a play in parts will also be a part of this service.
The Triduum - Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil
Maundy Thursday, April 5 We will gather in the parish hall for the service of the Word (first half of the Eucharist) with a family style Mediterranean meal in the spirit of the last supper Jesus ate with his disciples. Holy Communion will follow in the second half of the service with procession to the altar of repose with the reserved sacrament (bread from Communion) to set in a garden to remind us of Gethsemane in the Sanctuary. A vigil will be kept at the altar of repose until midnight. Good Friday, April 6 At 12:00 Noon and 6:00 P.M. At noon we will pray the stations of the cross and read the passion narrative. At 6 P.M., there will be readings and reflections on the passion of Christ and the veneration of the cross. Music will be a part of the 6 P. M. service. The nursery will be open during the 6 P.M. service. The Great Vigil of Easter, April 7 On Saturday night, we will light the Paschal (Easter) fire at 6 P.M., outside the west entrance to the Sanctuary. The Easter Vigil liturgy begins in darkness with song and story reminding us of our journey from Creation to Easter. Creativity in storytelling and singing will abound this year, and a glorious celebration of holy baptism and the celebration of the first Eucharist of Easter will wrap up our service as we proclaim once again, "The Lord is risen! The Lord is risen indeed!" We will then break the fast of Lent with a festive reception (chocolate, hors d'oeurvres, champagne and equally attractive bubbly non-alcoholic beverages). Children are welcome at all services, and encouraged to attend and participate. Too close to bedtime? Bring them out in their pj's. Bedtime snacks, blankies, and stuffed animals in the pews are also welcome. Easter, Sunday, April 8 Sunday Services The Holy Eucharist Rite I 8:00 A.M. Rite II 10:30 A.M. The Nursery is open for Easter Sunday during the 10:30 A.M. service. There will be a Children's Chapel during the 10:30 A.M. service in that parish hall & an egg hunt after this service Special music for the service will include the Adult/Youth Choir, Trumpet, Steel Pan Drum, and the Children's Choir has been preparing festive music for the 10:30 A.M. service!

CROSSwalk is a four-mile Holy Week procession
across the heart of the city to remember murdered youth and connect participants with opportunities to protect children, mitigate violence and support families struggling with these issues.
CROSSwalk is not a protest march. It is a vigil, one tied directly to follow-up action. Through it all, we want to remember...to reflect and mourn...to express outrage and pray for those who have been lost. CROSSwalk will take place on Monday, April 2, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at St. James Cathedral. Rev. Stacy, Rev. Rich, Oscar and Rowan plan to do the first part of the walk (weather permitting). We won't go if it's pouring rain for example). If you would like to go as a group from St. Paul's, contact Rev. Stacy today. We will be riding the Metra downtown from Elburn. Lots of walking is involved, so plan to wear appropriate clothing to be outdoors and walk for up to four miles. |

St. Paul's Parishioners are invited to Good Friday Services at St. George Greek-Orthodox Church, Friday, April 13 th at 2:30 p.m.
Bessie Cronopolis, a parishioner and former mayor of Dekalb thought it would be nice to get together and see a service in our old church. The service at this time is a short (1 hour) service in which Christ is removed from the cross and placed in a container to signify his burial. It will be a very interesting service! Their priest is very open to our attending. If anyone is interest, please call Rosemarie Ostberg at 815-758-5216 and we can plan to go as a group from St. Paul's.
