November 2011

Dear Friends in Christ,

This month at St. Paul's we are entering into a season of Thanksgiving. We are also entering into a time of budget preparation for 2012, which is why you have received (or will receive shortly) our annual fall pledge letter and pledge card.

I don't know about you, but thinking about the church budget is not the main reason I give to St. Paul's. In fact, to be perfectly honest, I don't think about budgets much at all when I am spending my money anywhere. We do discuss as a family each month how much money we can spend and still live within our means. We make sure we set aside a little every month into our savings account for a rainy day. We make sure we set aside enough to pay our bills. But when it actually comes down to where we spend our discretionary income we strive to spend our money where we think it will do the most good based on the values of our family. Our priorities (in no particular order) are God, God's people (The Church), our family, and our overall health and wellbeing.

Of course, sometimes we find ourselves spending money on frivolous things like fast food that really don't align with our priorities. That's why we find examining the stewardship of the money we have been blessed with such a fruitful exercise. We also find these conversations to be very helpful when we look at our calendar and decide where we will spend our time every month. These conversations often turn into living prayers about what new talents God may be calling forth from us. If you had told me six months ago I would turn into an avid runner, I would have laughed! But, as it turns out this was a talent laying long dormant within me. I'm now a healthier and happier mother, wife, priest, and child of God as a result of responding to the Spirit's nudge (or shove, depending on the day) into running.

Taking the time to talk, often nightly around the dinner table, helps us get back on the track of good stewardship when we find ourselves straying from our priorities. We remind ourselves that we value using our resources of time, talent, and treasure in a way that reflects our thankfulness for everything that God has given us. And every good thing we have comes from God.

It is with thankful hearts that we write our check to the mission of the Church at St. Paul's each month. We feel truly blessed to have been called to this spiritual journey with you. Oscar and Rowan have never had such a good time at church! Our check to St. Paul's is the first we write every month. And we write it in thanksgiving for the laughter of our children on Sunday mornings, for their energetic voices in the children's choir, for the friendships they have made with the other kids at St. Paul's and with those who are kids at heart, for the theologians and lovers of God's Word they are becoming through the blessing of our Godly Play Sunday School teachers, and for the enhanced spiritual life of our family in our everyday prayers--it's all thanks to the Holy Spirit at work through the people who are St. Paul's. (Rich and I are also having a great time with the other grown-ups as well, but that story is for another time!)

I am so grateful for each and every one of you. And I know that God is at work in your lives too. I invite you to lift up the blessings of life that you are thankful for during this Season of Thanksgiving. We will have ribbons available at a creative station in the parish hall in early November to make a visual prayer of our thanksgivings as the Church of St. Paul. Every one of every age and ability is invited to write on and decorate a ribbon. We will present these prayers visually and verbally, along with our pledge cards at the celebratory close of our Season of Thanksgiving on Christ the King Sunday, November 20th, 2011.  See you then!

In Christ,

Rev. Stacy+

A Season of Thanksgiving at St. Paul's:
Sunday, October 30th - Sunday, November 20th, 2011

The Stewardship Team at St. Paul's is sponsoring a Season of Thanksgiving from Sunday, October 30th through Sunday, November 20th, 2011.  Please prayerfully consider how you will support the ministries of St. Paul's in the year to come.  Living lives of stewardship and thanksgiving are the themes that we are focusing on during our Sunday celebrations of the Holy Eucharists (aka The Great Thanksgiving) in this season.

A special thanks from congregation of St. Paul's and
The St. Paul's Endowment Committee

On October 3, 2011, St. Paul's received a generous donation from the estate of Charles and Mary Roberts.  This donation was in the sum of $275,200.  We, at St. Paul's, would like to take this time to say a very special "thank you" to the Roberts family and to God for this gift. Words truly cannot express our gratitude!

Diocesan Convention: Friday & Saturday, November 18 & 19, 2011
D.O.C.
This year, the Diocesan Convention will be held on Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19, 2011, at the Westin Hotel in Lombard, IL.

All are welcome to attend!
Don't Forget, Sunday, November 13, 2011        is Food Pantry Sunday!

Food PantryOn Sunday, October 9, 2011, parishoners donated 133 items and $50 in cash to the Salvation Army Food Pantry, bringing St. Paul's total donations year-to-date to 1309 items, as well as two baskets of fresh vegetables, and $50 in cash.

St. Paul's has been generous with its donations in the past. However, we encourage parishioners to consider making more consistent contributions. If you forget to bring your offering on Food Pantry Sunday (Second Sunday of each month), just bring your food any time and place it in one of the baskets. This is a ministry that St. Paul's can grow and it really does not have to cost anyone a lot of money. Please consider bringing some contribution, no matter how small. If you don't have time to shop, drop a designated donation for the Food Pantry by the parish office or in the collection plate and we will shop for you.

Remember, a big part of our Christian action in living into the mission or the Church is to help those less fortunate than we are.

The Second Sunday of each month we offer our donations to the food pantry before the altar at the Holy Eucharist. Non-perishable food items (no glass jars, please) and monetary donations can be dropped off on any Sunday, or at the parish office Monday through Thursday, 9AM-2PM. For further information please contact Pat and Vince at (815) 758-1575.

The Salvation Army Community Wide Thanksgiving Meal Program

Salvation Army Shield

The Salvation Army's Community Wide Thanksgiving Meal Program is underway for 2011. This food drive brings the community together to provide Thanksgiving meals to those who would otherwise not have the ability to provide a traditional Thanksgiving meal for their family. Last year, nearly 800 baskets were provided to families in DeKalb County and the Salvation Army expects to distribute the same amount, if not more, to families in need. If you would like further information please contact Maureen Gerrity at (815) 895-8084 or Jennie Cummings at (815) 758-6873

 Christmas Flower Donations

poinsettias
It's time to start thinking about Christmas flower memorials and thanksgivings again! The flowers that are on the altar each week are provided by the generous donations of our parishioners.  You can sign up, for any Sunday, to dedicate flowers in memory of someone or in thanksgiving of someone or something.  We are accepting donations for Christmas flowers now through Sunday, December 18, 2011.  Please write "Christmas Flowers" in the memo of your check.  You may place these in the collection plate.  For other Sundays stop by the parish hall and sign up on the flower sign up sheet, if you would like to give flowers.

Hobby & Craft Show:

Sunday, November 20, 2011

Hobby

St. Paul's Hobby & Craft Show is scheduled for Sunday, November 20th this year. Parishioners are invited to display their hobbies and crafts so we can all enjoy them too. Craft people may offer items for sale or just for display. In the past we have had displays of jewelry, collectibles, scenic post cards, comforting elephants, ceramics, small quilts and runners, crochet and knit objects, specialty jelly and jams, wooden banks, sewing projects and games. Show us what you are up to when you are not in church. There is no entry fee for this show and display space is limited to the St. Paul's family. In an effort to ensure everyone has enough room, we do ask that you let us know how much space you will need for your display. Questions? Contact Betsy Pool at (815) 895-8271.

We will gather Wednesday nights in the Parish Hall at 5:45PM for a potluck soup supper.  Program for adults and youth will run from 6:15-7:15PM.  Childcare will be provided for our youngest members.

Reading Glue:                                 A Creation of Jamie & Julie Stubblefield

Reading Glue logoOn October 6th, the publishing company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt announced the winners of their 2011 Global Education Challenge in Washington DC. Taking third place honors were Julie and Jamie Stubblefield with their idea Reading Glue. Reading Glue is a digital reading program that provides parents the tools they need to implement guided / leveled reading practice at home, and digital solutions that allow them to keep reading practice on track while on the go. The third place prize included $15,000 to invest in developing the idea, and $15,000 in reading materials that will be donated to Founders Elementary in DeKalb.  We, at St. Paul's, would just like to personally congratulate Jamie & Julie Stubblefield on this amazing accomplishment.  This story further illustrates how God will use anyone, from anywhere, to accomplish extraordinary things!

News from The Episcopal Church Women (ECW)

ECW logo

The Diocesan Episcopal Church Women (ECW) has been busy rewriting our By-Laws. They ask us to examine the copy of the proposed changes which is on the table in the Parish Hall. We are asked to discuss them at a St. Paul's ECW business meeting, and to be prepared to accept or reject them at the Annual Diocesan ECW meeting on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at St. James Cathedral. They believe the revision will answer a need of women in our Diocese.

Volunteers Needed for our Sunday School Ministry!

Godly Play
Click here for more info on Godly Play

We need the following volunteers for our Sunday School ministry. Please let us know if you can help!

Door Person: This person helps the children "get ready to learn" before they enter the Godly Play classroom and during the lesson, if needed. They also assist the children in getting and putting away their "work" and prepare the "feast" (a snack and drink) for the group. 9:00 - 10:15 a.m. on the Sunday mornings you choose to serve. If you are interested or would like more information, contact Julie Stubblefield at (815) 793-4585. A brief training is provided.

Artists / Crafters / Woodworkers / Knitters / Sewers: The cost of one Godly Play weekly lesson for two classrooms ranges from $40 - $600 if purchased from the website. In order to conserve our resources, we choose to make as many of the materials that we can ourselves for a fraction of the cost. By volunteering your talents, you are helping to create memorable stories for the children and allowing more stories to be told. Materials are provided. If you are interested or would like more information, contact Maureen Gerrity at (815) 895-8084.

A Special Thanks to TAILS Humane Society and all those who attended our 2011 Pet Blessing

St. Paul's would like to give a special thanks to TAILS Humane Society and everyone who attended and made this year's 3rd annual pet blessing a huge success! There were 29 humans, 12 dogs, 2 cats and 1 rabbit in attendance. We look forward to seeing you all again, for our 4th annual pet blessing the first Sunday of October, next year! Until then, please know that you are all greatly appreciated and we could not have done this without you.
A Special Thanks to all those who donated and participated in the 2011 Crop Walk

Crop Walk 2011 The total raised by St. Paul's as of Sunday, October 23rd, was $805. Rev. Stacy raised the most of any walker, and she and Lorraine Langer, received pins for raising more than $200 each! What an accomplishment by two of St. Paul's members!

The total raised in the Sondra King Memorial Crop Walk (Northern DeKalb County region) as of October 2011 was $28,000! The treasurer thinks that more funds will come in to bring that total to $30,000!

Thanks to all in St. Paul's who donated to CROP Walk, and to all who walked and/or collected funds. This is a great help to alleviate hunger, both in DeKalb County and around the world.
