Dear Friends in Christ,

The Book of Common Prayer defines a sacrament as the outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ as sure and certain means by which we receive that grace (page 857). The two great Sacraments of the Church were indeed given to us by Christ: Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. However, these are not the only places that we experience the inward and spiritual grace of God. I was reminded of this recently when reviewing the creation story in Genesis, a portion of which will be read at our Pet Blessing in honor of St. Francis of Assisi on October 2nd.

In The Message translation, the Blessed Trinity in conversation and contentment within Godself speaks these words that create the world as we know it, and names humans as the stewards of Creation:

God spoke: "Let us make human beings in our image, make them
      reflecting our nature
So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea,
the birds in the air, the cattle,
   And, yes, Earth itself,
and every animal that moves on the face of Earth."
   God created human beings;
      he created them godlike,
   Reflecting God's nature.
He created them male and female.
   God blessed them:
"Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge!
Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air,
for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth."

Genesis 1:26-28

From the beginning, God has blessed humankind with the care of the world and her creatures. Every day we have been given the opportunity to see the sacred in the ordinary-to encounter God in our relationships with one another and with everything that has breath upon the earth. At its heart a sacrament is an official recognition in the church of the experience of the Holy in everyday things-water, oil, bread, and wine. But every day has the potential to be viewed as sacramental when we intentionally live into our call as the stewards of creation.

For example, when I give my cat a lift up to his food dish on the washing machine because he's too old to jump up anymore, I am caring for creation. When I run with my puppy, and am patient with his God-given drive to leap after the squirrels along the way, I am caring for creation (and I am being a steward of the squirrels as well by keeping him on a short leash!).   When I visit with someone and listen with care to their difficult and joyful experiences, I am caring for Creation.   When I give the fruits of our garden to someone who is hungry, literally and/or spiritually, I am caring for Creation. When I consider carefully how and where I will spend the money I have been blessed with in the essentials of daily living as well as in the various ministries in the Church, I am forever reflecting on how best to do this while honoring my sacred role as one of God's 6 billion (and growing!) caretakers, or stewards, of Creation.

As your priest, it is my goal to provide a welcoming space for reflecting upon and experiencing the sacred in the everyday at this corner of Creation we humbly call the Episcopal Church of St. Paul. In blessing our pets, we recognize that unconditional love of God that we see a glimpse of in the adoration of our animal friends. At the end of this month we will enter a Season of Thanksgiving as we think intentionally about giving of our time, talents, and treasure at St. Paul's. I encourage you to reflect on the good things in your life and see where God is calling you to carry out the stewardship of Creation.

In Christ,

Rev. Stacy+

CROP Walk on Sunday, October 23, 2011 at 2:00 P.M.
                         October 2011

Crop Walk

St. Paul's Episcopal Church has participated very successfully in the Northern DeKalb County CROP Walk for many, many years. The Walk in Northern DeKalb County is now called the Sondra King Memorial CROP Walk.

This year more than 20 area churches and organizations plan to participate in the CROP Walk, on Sunday, October 23rd, 2011. The opening program will begin at 2:00 P.M. and walkers will step off at 3 pm. The route will begin and end at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 615 N. First Street, DeKalb. Some walkers will complete a four-mile walk, while others can walk the Golden Mile.

All walkers -- Children, youth, and adults -- will be uniting symbolically with those who regularly walk much farther to secure food and water. Last year the CROP Walk in Northern DeKalb County raised $29,000. This year's goal is $31,000, to help end hunger in DeKalb County and around the world.

This local CROP Hunger Walk is one of many similar community fundraising events sponsored by Church World Service (CWS), an international relief, development and refugee resettlement agency. Money raised by CWS/CROP is used to provide food, medical care, disaster relief and self-help development around the world.

Also 25 percent of the funds raised will be returned to DeKalb County to be shared by Meals on Wheels, Hope Haven, Safe Passage and various area food pantries. Some of the area food pantries currently serve more than 200 families per week.

At St. Paul's, funds are being collected for CROP Walk by Michael Duffy, Mary Lincoln, Henry Leonard, and Larry Retherford. If you would like to collect funds and/or walk for CROP Walk, please contact Henry Leonard (815)758-4831. And please give generously to one of these people.

We will gather Wednesday nights in the Parish Hall at 5:45PM for a potluck soup supper.  Program for adults and youth will run from 6:15-7:15PM.  Childcare will be provided for our youngest members.

Sign up sheets for the potlucks are available in the parish hall.  Sign up today!

And mark your calendars for our next two sessions also on Wednesday evenings at St. Paul's:

Are you interested in joining a Fellowship Group at St. Paul's?

Fellowship groups are small groups of parishioners, usually 6-8 people, who meet monthly to share a meal and conversation. The groups will meet from October to April (or May). Groups may meet in a home, go out for dinner, or do a combination of both. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to meet and get to know your fellow parishioners. If you are interested, please let us know by signing up on the respective sheets, in the parish hall. We would like all those who are interested to sign-up by Sunday, October 2nd, 2011, to insure that groups are formed and can meet during the month of October.

October 2nd--Part of the Family?  Caring for a Pet

We will explore the joy of having a pet as well as our moral and ethical responsibility to care for them.

October 9, 16, 23, &30--Great Themes of the Bible:

This study suggests that four major themes are to be found in the Bible that tell us about God and God's role in our lives. First, God is with us; we are not fugitives wandering the earth bereft of larger meaning. Second, God is most concerned not with kings and human power but with "the least of these my brothers and sisters." Third, God loves us; at the center of the creation is a heart of compassion. And fourth, God is always bigger than we think; our minds are repeatedly too small to fathom the enormity of God's mind and heart.
