We had a great response to our annual survey of environmental educators. 187 teachers and 74 agency professionals filled out a survey.

The results will be summarized and ready to share in the April newsletter.

 

Outdoor Leadership Courses  

The Outdoor Council is developing certification courses to help train and certify people to become effective leaders in outdoor settings.

These two day courses provide valuable decision making and leadership skills for anyone who leads groups outdoors, including teachers. Learn more about the program.

World Water Day - March 22

This United Nations coordinated event has the theme this year of Water and Food Security.
 

 Funding for School School Ground Greening Toyota Evergreen Grant

Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds helps schools create outdoor classrooms to provide students with a healthy place to play, learn and develop a genuine respect for nature.

Amounts available: $500-$3,500 for schools, $500-$2,000 for daycares.

 

Deadline: March 16, 2012

KidWind Challenge      

The KidWind Challenge is a student wind turbine design contest. Over a period of a couple months, students spend time designing and constructing their own wind turbines with the goal of creating a device that is efficient, elegant and highly functional. The students then bring their creations to the challenge event and all designs are tested in the wind tunnel.

This year the challenge will take place at Lethbridge College. Learn more and register here. 
 
Teacher's Conventions
ACEE presented at four conventions this year, it was a great experience to share environmental education with teachers.

If you missed us at convention, here are some of the resources we shared:
  • Five Minute Field Trips - this is a 'greatest hits' collection of activities you can do in your local park or schoolyard.  
  • Leap Into Action - this guide gives simple steps and activities on doing an action project with your class.  
 
Tracking Water from Space
This video profiles a NASA program that is using satellites to track the impact of climate change on the planet's vast tracts of freshwater, saltwater, and ice. Physics, space, water and the impact of humans is all covered in this well produced video. It really helps you see the bigger picture! Here is the link.  
 
Environmental Artworks Contest
My Favorite Outdoor Place is the theme of the contest this year. Grade categories are 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. Photographs and original art are both accepted.

Summer Institute
Canadian Wildlife Federation hosts a summer teacher institute every year. Nunavut is the destination for the program this year July 21-28.

School Ground Greening - Edmonton Workshops
Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds helps schools and their communities create outdoor classrooms. Learn how to create a food garden or naturescape at your school and how to apply for a greening grant.

Get Recognized as One of Canada's First Green High Schools

 

It's not too late to get involved! Recruitment is still open for all schools interested in becoming a recognized GREEN High School. If you already have a project underway or will be starting a project in this semester, becoming a GREEN High School is easy:

  • Explore environmental careers related to your project;
  • Document your efforts in words, pictures, or on video; and
  • Submit your project evaluation and documentation before May 14, 2012.
