Encana Environmental Education Resource Centre       

In September ACEE launched this on-line searchable environmental  education resource database. Today, we have 88 organizations and over 400 resources listed! Search the database now.

You can search by grade, curriculum, topic, region of the province or organization. There are field trips, lesson plans, classroom visits and more.

The list of resources is always growing,  let us know if we missed your favorite environmental education resource and we will add it to the database! 

 
Invite Your Students to Send a Message to the Education Minister!
The Minister of Education is encouraging your students to 'Speak Out' on what Alberta students of tomorrow should learn about the environment - and how to take care of it!  Send this link to your students before the end of January, and have them follow the 'Featured Discussion' links:  http://www.speakout.alberta.ca/
 
Education for the Environment - New Graduate Program
The University of Calgary is offering a Graduate Certificate in Education for the Environment. By completing three certificates you would earn a MEd.

This program is designed for educators who wish to build experiential and foundational depth in environmental education by developing new understanding, caring and concern for the ways human beings are connected to and impact the natural world.

Application deadline is March and the program starts in July 2012.  Learn more about this great opportunity!

Snow Safety
  • The Canadian Avalanche Association has a page for educators that lists the services they can offer in your classroom. They also have a page for youth all about avalanche safety. 

Fun Outdoors

Winter Ecology

  • Scientist in the Classroom in the Lethbridge area will have your grade 1 students exploring how animals survive winter in their program - Reasons for the Seasons. 
  • Travelling on snowshoes, grade 6 students look for evidence of animal activity in the forests of Kananaskis Country in the Winter Detectives program.  
 
Caped heros of SLISE 

Congratulation to SLISE Team!  

Aaron Dublenko, a teacher at Queen Elizabeth High School in Edmonton attended the 2011 Cenvus Energy Environmental Education Leadership Clinic with three of his students: Cayley, Marc and Thia. They are part SLISE - Student Led Initiatives for Sustainable Education.   

 

In December, their LifeStraw project and fundraiser was profiled in the Edmonton Journal and on CTV news. Way to go!

 
Emerald Awards Nominations Now Open
Nominate an environmental rock star in your community! There are 9  different categories - including schools!

The deadline for nominations is February 24.
 
Toyota Earth Day Scholarships
The Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program encourages and rewards graduating Canadian high school students who have distinguished themselves through environmental community service, extracurricular and volunteer activities, and academic excellence. Learn more and apply. 
 
Two Wheel View Bike Trips 

Two Wheel View is now accepting application for their summer student bike trips to Argentina, Norway and Quebec. Pass this along to any student (14+) you know who may be interested! Learn more here

Urban EE Learning Community    

Cool idea! This program is now full, but they are taking names for a waiting list if you are still interested.

This North American wide Professional Learning Community (PLC) is being launched January 19 with a webinar. This PLC will use chat, blogs, wikis and webinars to advance the field of urban environmental education.  Learn more and register for the launch.  

 
 Natural Play Highlighted
This video profiles three school in Scotland who have changed their school yard to incorporate natural play. They added a giant sand box, platforms for jumping, tarps and branches for building forts and piles of hay. Parents, teachers and lunch time supervisors have noticed remarkable changes in their students. Watch it here.
