Deep Learning and Reflection - 2011 Leadership Clinic

9 teams attended the 4th annual Cenovus Energy Environmental Education Leadership Clinic. Here is what some of the participants said about their experience:

"We now have an action orientation and a solid direction to move in; prior to the clinic we were basically in a holding pattern."

"The impact from this Clinic will be substantial as we have a cohesive direction and the support of team members who are now all speaking the "same language".

All the resources shared at the 2011 clinic are posted as well as the goals tackled by each group.

If you are interested in attending this amazing event, applications will be out early in the New Year and posted here.

Family and Nature - Toolkit from the Child Nature Network

"If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder...he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitment and mystery of the world we live in."

                            -Rachel Carson

This toolkit gives parents ideas on how to engage with their children outside, to be that person to share in the joy of nature with kids. There are ideas for children of all ages.

Engaging Students in Learning About the Environment

Inquiry based learning is now a familiar term used by teachers across the province. How are you using inquiry to teach about the environment? Here are some sites that profile what teachers are doing and the thought behind their work with students.

  • Natural Curiosity is a website out of Ontario presenting an approach they call Environmental Inquiry. Along with the theory, stories from teachers in the classroom are used to illustrate the process.
  • Connect! is the blog from the Calgary Science School. Teachers share their programs and progress with students. They have just posted an Introduction to Inquiry document on their blog.

What are you doing in your classroom and how are you sharing it with others? We would love to hear about it

Connecting Environmental Educators in Alberta

One of the roles identified for ACEE is to develop, encourage and support networks that help advance environmental education in Alberta.
To that end we are interested in your thoughts about environmental education networks in Alberta. Here are some things to consider:
  • Should a network be an on-line or face to face community?

  • Should they be organized by topic? By region?

  • What would you like to get out of these networks?

If you have any thoughts you would like to share, contact Christina.
