Waste Reduction Week is October 18-24
This is a national initiative that focuses our attention on the waste we produce and how everyone can contribute to decreasing their output.WRW Logo
Here are some resources for the classroom:
  • Triple Stars is a program from Alberta Environment focused on the grade 4 curriculum. Download resources and register by October 18 to be eligible for great prizes.
  • Waste Reduction Week has a section dedicated to resources for schools with lesson plans, waste audit templates and games. There are resources here for all grades.

Provides tools and resources to help teachers bring energy conservation and emerging alternative energy technologies into the classroom.

October is International Walk to School Month!                  
In 2009, 40 countries participated. Here are some resources to help you get involved in this initiative that combines environment, health and community.

  • Read our most recent blog post and see pictures of a walking school bus initiative in Canmore.
  • SHAPE is a provincial organization promoting safe routes to school. They have a Walking School Bus manual for Alberta schools.
 
Force of Nature - The David Suzuki Movie
A movie about David Suzuki's life, Canada's most recognized and passionate environmental leader plays in Calgary and Edmonton on October 15. Click here for clips from the movie and locations.
 
Writers Needed - Teachers and Students
The Global, Environmental,and Outdoor Education Council (GEOEC) is looking for submissions for the next issue of Connections. The theme is Classroom and Community Projects. Submissions can be made to Lara Fenton at lfenton@ualberta.ca.
ON-LINE FINDS
Green Heroes - Hockey players, musicians and race car drivers?
These short videos tell the stories of national and international green heroes, famous and unknown. The list includes Sarah Harmer (musician), Andrew Ference (Boston Bruins) and Leilani Munter (race car driver). You can also nominate your own heroes for future episodes.

Drawing Contest from EcoKids and EarthDay Canada  
Artists are asked to answer the question: What can you do to help the environment? Select submission will be used in the 2011-2012 EcoKids calendar and all submissions are entered in a draw for digital camera. Deadline for submissions is November 12, 2010.
