Be Idle Free Video Contest
Students aged 7 to 18 in Edmonton and area are invited to enter a video contest on the topic of vehicle idling. Prizes will be awarded to different age caedmonton idle free logotegories, as well as one grand prize for best overall. Video entries will be accepted until just before midnight, September 30, 2010.  The opportunity to vote for favourite submissions ends just before midnight, October 11, 2010. Buy, Use, Toss? A Closer Look at the Things We Buy
An interdisciplinary unit that includes ten fully-planned lessons. Students will learn about the five major steps of the materials economy: extraction, production, distribution, consumption, and disposal. Click here to download this free resource from Facing the Future.
 
Adventures in Renewable Energy Technology
GreenLearning.ca has re-designed their re-energy.ca site. Students of all ages find detailed construction plans to build working models of wind turbines, solar ovens, hydroelectric generators, and biogas generators. Students can also make use of related links as well as backgrounders.
 
Bosch Canadian Eco-Leaders Award
This award celebrates the grassroots efforts of Canadians to make a difference in their communities. Winners receive $5000 to advance their work. Nominate an individual or organization in your community, deadline September 19. Click here for more information.

Conservation Biology Course
St. Mary's University College and the Southern Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society are offering Biology Conservation 451 this fall. The course begins September 7. There are subsidies available for community members interested in taking the course. For more information click here.

Mandatory EE considered in Maryland schools
State officials in Maryland are promoting a plan that would make the study of environmental education a requirement for all students to graduate from the state's public high schools. What do you think?  Read more here.

I believe that we need to foster community in our schools. Then small scale will transfer to a large scale, one step at a time, as we move from a caring school community to a caring global community. Schools need to supply the infrastructure and foundation of citizenship in youth.

What we need are schools full of communities, not classrooms.
