Greetings!

Tomorrow we welcome Fabio Cascione of Vigne e Vini, an outstanding winery located in Puglia. Vigne e Vini mainly focuses on native (indigenous) grapes from Puglia such as Negroamaro and Primitivo; Fabio will be on hand to answer any questions pertaining to this unique growing region of Italy.  We will taste a Verdeca, a Negroamaro, and two Primitivos.  More information below.  See you there!

Friday Night Tasting Lineup

2009 Vigne & Vini Moi Verdecca del Salento IGT, Puglia

Pleasant to the eye. Very fragrant. Rich version of the Puglian white. There is a nice forest, fresh jasmine and white rose floral note to the nose, and almond, melon, and white tree fruit on the palate. The savory note goes to light spice for me on the finish. Crisp acidity. "At the sight it presents a yellow color with hints of green, very transparent. The nose shows intense floral scents and delicate fruity notes of citrus. The palate is savory, long and decisively fresh with the perfect body. The finish is persistent and reminiscent of almonds and apples. It matches perfectly with prawns and linguine clam."

2007/08 Vigne & Vini Passione Primitivo IGT

Deeply ruby colored and hearty. Intense and wide olfactory memories of raspberry jam, blackberry, kirsch, sweet spices and peanut butter and, in addition, interesting salty notes. The taste is balanced & clean, with some spice box and pipe tobacco around the round fruit mid-palate - fresh and persistent. Full in body with silky tannins make it a great match to many Mediterranean dishes. Great for the money. "A lot is written about the origin of the grape Primitivo. The word Primitivo is derived from the word "first" or "prima" in Italian because the grapes mature earlier with respect to others. Passione, a wine with a deep ruby red color, has elegant fragrances, with a rich spicy taste. The wine is full bodied given to the softness of the tannins and the versatility of matching with many Mediterranean dishes."

2009 Vigne & Vini Schiaccianoci Negroamaro, Salento

15% Malvasia Nera. Nutcracker - deep color and concentration, bold nose with spice, fruitcake, tobacco leaf, supple leather. Smooth, ripe palate, with a bit of bitter mineral almond to finish, tightening it back up. Ages well and has the darker spice and pepper notes come to the fore. Great with aged, harder cheeses like Pecorino, or rich braised meat dishes. "Ruby-red colored wine with a decisive rich structure, extracted from typical grapes of Salento such as Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. Intense fragrance of ripe fruit, oak and spices, well balanced and smooth taste with a finale of mature carob. A wine which matches perfectly with all dishes that accompany grilled meats and seafood."

Our Price: 15.97

2008 Vigne & Vini Papale Primitivo di Manduria DOC, Puglia

Italian Zinfandel that is dark and lush with rich flavors of blueberries, blackberries with notes of toasted cocoa and coffee beans. There is other dark fruit here as well, in the form of a plum mid-palate. Weighty with sweet spice, some toasty hazelnut on the finish. Recommendation: Great with grilled meats, pasta bolognese, hard cheeses. Intensely fragrant Old Vine Primitivo reminiscent of fruit jam, cocoa and licorice. Round and velvety smooth. "Primitivo grapes are harvested from old vineyards located near the Ionian sea, cultivated "ad alberello" with a very low top yield per hectare. The color is ruby red with very nice violet hints. The fragrance is very intense and reminiscent of fruit jam and blackcurrant, cherry and mulberry, cocoa and liquorice. A round, smooth taste with fruity notes and an aromatic aftertaste, Papale is ideal with gravy, braised and stewed meat."
