Friday Night Tasting Lineup

2009 Saumur Les Pouches White

Found it online for $21. The town of Saumur is a storied town boasting a fairytale castle. For a thousand years, peasants have dug into the hillsides to create houses from the chalky soil. The same soil which also allows vignerons the luxury of extensive cellars is directly responsible for the quality of the local wines. This 100% Chenin Blanc is made from a favored vineyard of 40 year old vines, which provides low yields and concentrated acidity. The result is a dry white wine with stunning, racy acidity with refreshing apple, lemon peel, floral and fruity notes. This wine pairs beautifully with white fish, mussels, or a crisp salad. Jump into spring early and try a bottle. This has been a go to Chenin Blanc in the shop for a bit, we really like it.

2010 DDG Perrieres Sancerre

Jerome & Frederique Gueneau created the Domaine in 1993. Domaine Grandes Perrieres has vineyards located in Chavignol and Sury-en-Vaux, villages known for producing a more minerally styled Sancerre, due to the rocky soil. The Sancerre is vinified in stainless steel and is aged on the lees just enough to give it nice roundness with tropical fruit flavors while maintaining the classic Sancerre flintiness and minerality. This is a concentrated wine selected for its exquisite minerality, from grapes grown on the classic clay and limestone soils of Sancerre. A wine with a fresh grassy Sauvignon aroma and a complex layered finish. Wines like these benefit from age; approaching its peak now but there is no hurry to drink this up. Great value Sancerre, at a very low price. We think that this is a great example, and we hope to always have it in good supply. This goes so well with food preparations that are using aromatic herbs, mint especially.

2009 Ferraton Cotes du Rhone Red Samorens

Stylish, with a core of red and black cherry fruit caressed by lavender and warm stone notes on the tender finish. Drink now. Nose: very ripe red fruit. Palate: nicely structured with firm and meaty tannins. Aromas of small ripe fruit and spices. Taking full advantage of the superb 2009 vintage, this Samorëns is the best we have tasted. Absolute benchmark Côtes du Rhône - soft, round and full of warm brambly fruit. The perfect all-purpose red to stock up your wine rack for the summer. Stoney, large pebbly soils similar to Châteauneuf. The grapes are destemmed and the vinification takes place in vats. With regular punching down of the grape "cap" for plenty of colour and some tannin. "Stylish, with a core of red and black cherry fruit caressed by lavender and warm stone notes on the tender finish. Drink now" - WS.

2009 Ferraton Cotes du Rhone Red Villages Plan de Dieu

From Cellar Tracker - still loving this for massively drinkable classic CDRV at great price / Mostly red fruits, a lot of garrigue, elegance and a slight touch of barnyard in the bouquet. On the palate also a lot of spiciness. Soft and round tannin. An expressive friendly wine. Waiting a year or two+ will not hurt. / Très bien, bel équilibre, goûteux, bon RQP. / "A laid-back style, with friendly cherry and currant fruit layered with enticing lavender and anise notes. A lightly dusty edge frames the finish. Drink now." This is where Côtes du Rhône-Villages excels, you get a solid, bullet-proof red at an affordable price, a wine that has complexity of flavor and delivers every time. With its "so ripe it's almost sweet" dark fruit and satin smooth mouthfeel, this is a seriously rewarding red wine. Grown on a river terraced covered with the Rhône valley's famous large river pebbles called galettes. Aged and matured in large old wood vats.
