Friday Night Tasting Lineup
2009 Bonny Doon Contra Old Vine Field Blend
Contra unites the earthy rusticity of old vine Carignane - that hard, stoniness that if untempered may be a tad too austere for some - with the luscious, opulent fruitiness of a number of the softer blending grapes. In the wine, you've got rocks and raspberries (or maybe they're mulberries or blackberries), a lively acidity, tannins that are firm but perfectly ripe. 55% Carignane, 16% Grenache, 14% Mourvedre, 7% Petite Sirah, 5% Zinfandel, 3% Syrah.

2008 Morgan Cotes du Crowe
Very sweet aroma, lots of very bright cherries and a lot, lot, lot of raspberry. There is a menthol aroma too, but it is very confected. The palate too is sweet, nice though, with good juicy raspberry & cherry and then some rather tasty leather, dried fruit. This Rhone-style blend (55% Syrah, 45% Grenache) has black cherry, blackberry pie, leather and spicy aromas that jump out of the glass. The wine is medium-bodied with soft tannins; it offers a mouthful of red berry and cherry, along with sweet spice, red currant and a bit of toasty oak. Its weight and balance make it a perfect pairing with anything grilled.

2010 Bonny Doon Clos de Gilroy Grenache
The wine is intensely aromatic, with notes of strawberry, raspberry, pepper, and wild herbs. Light bodied, supple, balanced. The dominant flavors on the palate are of red fruits: strawberry, red currant, kirsch, and strawberry-rhubarb. Cherry, cranberry. The wine exhibits all the hallmarks of exceptional cool climate Grenache-bright raspberries, a strong suggestion of black pepper and red fruits, and a supple, lingering finish. The strawberry-rhubarb of Grenache is complemented by a delicate note of kirsch from Cinsault and the spicy catch of Syrah's white pepper.

2008 Bonny Doon Le Pousseur Syrah
Dark berries, flowers, and a little pepper combine in a fragrant and amazingly strong aroma I could smell all day! Rich, full bodied, dark fruit, without too much acidity and complemented by a smooth earthiness. It all ends with a savory, tannic finish. Medium to full, with finer, lightly coating tannins. Bright acidity is there to complement the fresh red fruit flavors and fresh anise underneath. A granite minerality is present towards the cherry finish, that is just hinting at cherry tobacco and savory meats and herbs at this younger age.

2010 L'Aventure Stephan Ridge
Garnet color with bright red tints, aromas of raspberry and dried violets and a touch of pastis candies are forward. The attach is soft, with delicious blueberry and red fruit flavors arcing long and finishing evenly. Firmness in the middle palate and bright fruit combine to make for a charming and refreshing wine for patio and barbecue time. The "Stephan Ridge" Red is only released in select vintages (the last time was 2005). This wine is actually the result of utilizing the saigneé method of bleeding off wine from the flagship L'Aventure's Estate Cuvee. Ultimately this wine exists in order to insure the maximum potential of the Estate Cuvee, but it also is an enjoyable wine in its own right, retaining the same lush, powerful fruit quality and structure.
