Weekly Wine Update
Friday's Lineup

Greetings!

Tomorrow we welcome Chuck Weintraub here at the shop representing two wonderful west coast wineries: Bonny Doon from California and Owen Roe from Oregon!  Bonny Doon wines are biodynamically farmed and show a more "Old World" style of winemaking.  Owen Roe sources wines from both Oregon and Washington, making varietals suitable for these cooler climates.  See the notes below.  Don't miss out!

These emails are archived on the website; they can be accessed through the "current and past newsletters" link at www.eastendwinesatx.com. The weekly wine update is also tweeted, so if you are interested, you can follow us through the link below.

Friday Night Tasting Lineup

2009 Bonny Doon Contra Old Vine Field Blend 2009

Contra unites the earthy rusticity of old vine Carignane - that hard, stoniness that if untempered may be a tad too austere for some - with the luscious, opulent fruitiness of a number of the softer blending grapes. In the wine, you've got rocks and raspberries (or maybe they're mulberries or blackberries), a lively acidity, tannins that are firm but perfectly ripe. 55% Carignane, 16% Grenache, 14% Mourvedre, 7% Petite Sirah, 5% Zinfandel, 3% Syrah.

Our Price: 13.57

2010 Bonny Doon Clos de Gilroy Grenache

The wine is intensely aromatic, with notes of strawberry, raspberry, pepper, and wild herbs. Light bodied, supple, balanced. The dominant flavors on the palate are of red fruits: strawberry, red currant, kirsch, and strawberry-rhubarb. Cherry, cranberry.  The wine exhibits all the hallmarks of exceptional cool climate Grenache-bright raspberries, a strong suggestion of black pepper and red fruits, and a supple, lingering finish. The strawberry-rhubarb of Grenache is complemented by a delicate note of kirsch from Cinsault and the spicy catch of Syrah's white pepper.

Our Price: 18.57

2008 Bonny Doon Le Pousseur Syrah

Dark berries, flowers, and a little pepper combine in a fragrant and amazingly strong aroma I could smell all day! Rich, full bodied, dark fruit, without too much acidity and complemented by a smooth earthiness. It all ends with a savory, tannic finish. Medium to full, with finer, lightly coating tannins. Bright acidity is there to complement the fresh red fruit flavors and fresh anise underneath. A granite minerality is present towards the cherry finish, that is just hinting at cherry tobacco and savory meats and herbs at this younger age.

Our Price: 20.57

2009 Owen Roe Corvidae - The Keeper - Cabernet Franc Corvidae Wine Company's "Keeper" Cabernet Franc is made by Owen Roe. This Cabernet Franc is plush and velvety, full-bodied and easy drinking. The scent and flavors knock you out - spice joins black tea, fresh tobacco, thyme, sweet cedar chips, black berries and cassis. When Cabernet Franc is made from well ripened fruit, (as this wine is) it combines plush fruit and interesting accent notes with body that stands well with rich roasted and grilled meats. The Keeper "...is truly a "keeper". This deliciously large version of Cabernet Franc is smoother than Cabernet Sauvignon, less earthy than Merlot, approachable like Aussie Syrah and spicy like a smooth Zinfandel.

Our Price: 18.57

2009 Owen Roe Sharecropper's Cabernet

Ripe notes of black plum and pure cacao flavors abound and are bolstered by elegant scents of anise, tobacco and cranberry. The finish is lengthy and provides a precise acid structure.
