Valentré Bridge, Cahors

Greetings!

As many of you know, we taste A LOT of wine every week, and now we have decided to share the highlights with you!  These will include new wines we are excited about bringing into the shop and limited production/higher end wines we love and will offer on a special order basis.

This week, back by popular demand, is a DOUBLE tasting week!  Thursday we have Michael Resseguir presenting three French Malbecs from the Cahors region of France.  Then Friday, we have a special treat: artisanal meads from La Grange's Rohan Meadery!  Sound like an odd lineup this week?  Are you surprised?  We've gone crazy!  Come be crazy with us!

Malbec From Cahors

Michael Resseguier is the President & General Director at French Wines Co., Inc. All wines are blended from the following three vintages - 2002 - The aging of the tannins from the wines of this vintage in the blend contribute to more refinement and an elegant finish. Toasted & spicy notes. 2004 - Sunny vintage that is lending the wines generous red berry aromas and clean fruit concentration. 2005 - Very fresh tannins and fruit brighten and balance the older vintages in the blend. Black & Red fruits.

Oltis Malbec Expression de France

Reserve Marie (02-04-05)

Wild red & black berries on the nose. One of the traditional "Bordeaux varietals", Malbec has characteristics that fall somewhere between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. A midseason ripener, it can bring very deep color, ample tannin, and a particular plum-like flavor component to add complexity to claret blends. "Reserve Marie", from the Cahors in SW France - from 02, 04, 05 vintages from a "Barrique Perpetuelle" - like a Sherry Solera system. Malbec is "The Black Wine of Cahors," famous for inky color and robust tannins. Older vintages bring secondary development, more evolved, and softened tannins, youngest has more fruit forward black & red fruit & bright acids & freshness. From the Roman name for the river Lot which traverses Cahors. Malbec is thin skinned & needs more heat & sun to get ripe than Cab or Merlot, which is why it does well in warmer areas. Plum! SILVER MEDAL at Bordeaux Challenge International du vin 2009.

Malbec Classique de France Grand Chatelain Cahors

Reserve Gabriel (02-04-05)

Starts out with ripe and soft fruit, finish shows a bit of the oak that comes from 8% being aged in barrel, the rest in stainless steel vats. This example is quite ripe. The wine has a predominance of the 2002 vintage in its assemblage. Malbec is a finicky vine whose fruit is prone to rot and mildew. It is known in much of France as Côt, and, in Cahors, also as Auxerrois. There are in fact hundreds of local synonyms, since Malbec at one time was widely planted all over the country. Sensitivity to frost and proclivity to shatter or coulure (a disease that results in premature fruit drop) is the primary reason that Malbec has become a decreasing factor in most of France. Velvety finish after it opens a bit, nice gamy note there.

Our Price: 12.97

Malbec de France Le Plant du Roy Cahors

Grand Reserve Anne - (02-04-05)

Expressive black fruit, fresh, with candied fruit finish. 90% Stainless steel, 10% in barrels. Feminine style. Malbec is now the dominant red varietal in the Cahors area. The Appellation Controlée regulations for Cahors require a minimum content of 70%. SILVER MEDAL at the Bordeaux Challenge Internatioanl du Vin 2009. Tasted and approved by 2 "BEST SOMMELIERS OF THE WORLD" (PHILIPPE FAURE-BRAC AND ANDREAS LARSSON) and by Bordeaux famous winemaker DENIS DUBOURDIEU. - "This wine has an intense color, it's fruity, not too tannic and well structured. This cuvee Malbec de France, 100% Malbec, is doubtlessly one of the best I've ever tasted".
