Greetings!

This Friday we are doing something a little different.  We will have a Vinho Verde Rosé, a Cava, and a red and white Vermouth to taste. Then  we will taste a cocktail of the Cava and the Vermouths!  This will be a lot of fun and provide inspiration for your own summer concoctions!  Get ready for summer with us tomorrow starting at 4pm.

See you there!

NV Ramon Canals Canals Mont Paral Cava Brut

Lively, with decent length. Citrus accents fill out the dough and cereal notes in this light, round sparkling wine. Drink now. 3,000 cases made. -BS/WS. Xarel-lo, Macabeo, Parellada. White fruit character with moderate yeasty leesy backdrop. Fresh & silky, towards the more ripe side of Brut. Rounded on the mid-palate, lengthy finish.

Our Price: 13.97

Perucchi White Vermouth

This Spanish vermouth exhibits some buttered pastries, cinnamon and cloves. The profile is much closer to a Bianco style and finishes with a twist of citrus. It's a bit sweet, but not overtly so. Oustanding with notes of jasmine, honeysuckle, ginger and a touch of sassafras.  Notes of spice and citrus peel and a lingering flavor reminiscent of biting into a soft, honey ginger cake with just a touch more sweetness than the red Vermouth. Montana Perucchi has been making Vermouth in Barcelona since 1876. A selection of wines macerated with traditional herbs, fruits and roots, Perucchi's recipe contains over 40 distinct ingredients.  Enjoy it all by itself, served chilled or over ice as is done thoughout Spain. This also makes a fabulous cocktail ingredient which may well change your Martini recipe forever.

2010 Las Lilas Vinho Verde Rosé

Nestled in the valley of the Duoro River, the vineyards sit on the bank of the Duoro river, at 1000 feet altitude. There are 14 Hectares of land, almost half of which are planted with old vines (> 25 years old). Spritzy, Friendly, Fruity and Fun. An enjoyable strawberry / watermelon blend meant to be consumed now. A dry mineral streak, but unserious, with juicy intense fruits, demanding a mini cocktail umbrella. Ideally sipped with your feet dangling in a pool. This Portuguese Rosé has a beautiful strawberry red color. Serve it in a Champagne glass for a whimsical treat on a warm Spring day. The ripe berry flavors lead to a creamy, spritzy finish. This is a real bargain!

Perucchi Red Vermouth

The red Vermouth has great complexity and flavors of Christmas cookie spices, bitters, lemon, cola with lingering clove and spice. Just a hint of sweetness, this is outstanding served chilled or over ice as is common though-out Spain. Love it with a splash of La Casera or Seltzer water and a slice or two of lemon over ice.  As we have seen, it is awesome with Cava for a delightful summer cocktail. Alternately, try this in your favorite Manhattan recipe for a new twist on a classic cocktail. This red tastes like a sweet vermouth-Campari hybrid-bittersweet, profoundly earthy, and slightly reminiscent of Dubonnet Rouge, with a tannic finish not unlike chewing on fresh tobacco leaves.  Manhattan here I come!

and for the cocktails...

Mont Paral Cava Brut & Perucchi White Vermouth Cocktail

This has been a favorite porch cocktail for Matt & Sam, with the acidity and mineral of the cava lifting the weight and sweetness of the vermouth and making everything just right. We happily suggest sparkling water with the vermouth, but the Cava option is even better, blending the ripe fruit with the spice of the vermouth, and the acids tempering the sugar. Stony notes from the Cava compliment the earth of Perucchi's complex Vermouth.

Mont Paral Cava Brut & Perucchi Red Vermouth Cocktail

Now try the cocktail with the red vermouth - Again the acids of the Cava balance the sweetness of the Vermouth, with the mineral earth of each complimenting each other. The red vermouth is also sweet, but drier and less syrupy than your Torino-style rosso. The botanicals are strongest here, but so well integrated they take effort to pick apart. This makes a complex drink that is still quaffable in the heat.
